Teams not working, Needs Edge Webview2, Can't install Edge Webview2 as it is already installed, Cannot uninstall Edge Webview2

I usually have video meetings using Microsoft Teams and it is integrated into Outlook so I can open the meeting from my calendar directly.

Today, when I clicked the join button on the calendar to open Microsoft Teams, it did not open for some reason. I tried a few times, but it did not work, so I uninstalled Microsoft Teams, thinking I would reinstall it and see what happens.

When I downloaded the installer and tried installing it, it threw the following error.

So I downloaded Edge WebView2 and ran the file, but then I was met with another error

I then tried to uninstall Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime, thinking I would re-install it, but it did not appear on the list of apps installed on the PC.

I Googled this issue and referred to some Reddit articles and followed someone's suggestion, using cmd as administrator to uninstall Edge Webview2. It did not work.

Interestingly there was the Microsoft Teams icon when I clicked the start button on the taskbar. It said underneath that it was recently added. Out of curiosity I clicked it and Windows kinda crashed. The taskbar disappeared. Except for a weird looking Outlook logo with 'x' next to it.

The crash happened as I had Chrome open and was typing up this post.

I don't know what is causing this issue on this computer. I am hoping someone will be able to help.

Hello mr33,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are glad to assist!

Based on your description, I understand that you are facing some issues trying to run Microsoft Teams.

Based on the error message, it looks like there might be some issues with Edge Webview2, please try the below fix andcheck if there are any difference.

Please make sure there are no pending Windows and Microsoft Edge updates: Install Windows Updates - Microsoft Support

Try to force remove Edge Webview2 and reinstall it as shared in this thread and let us know if that helps: MS Edge WebView2 Runtime missing; when I download, install fails - Microsoft Community, Microsoft Edge WebView2 | Microsoft Edge Developer

Upon further check I found that there was an SI that might have caused this (SI tracking ID: TM984739):

Title: Users are intermittently unable to open the Microsoft Teams desktop client

User impact: Users are intermittently unable to open the Microsoft Teams desktop client.

More info: Users see an error stating "We've run into an issue. We can't find a required component to run Teams. Download and install it, and then try opening Teams again."
Affected users can bypass this issue by manually installing version 132 of Microsoft Edge WebView2 from the standalone installer.

Final status: We're awaiting additional information from your organization including multiple update logs from multiple impacted machines, clarification on if the auto-update policy is turned on for Microsoft Edge, and more information on the affected WebView 2 update registry for affected machines that's needed to progress the investigation. Please contact support once the requested information has been collected, and we'll resume our analysis of the issue.

Scope of impact: Your organization is affected by this event, and any user attempting to open Microsoft Teams desktop client is intermittently impacted.

This is the final update for the event.

The SI was resolved today, and they suggest raising a ticket if the issue persists:

Submit a service request: Global admins can create a service request with Microsoft Support for advanced technical assistance and diagnostics. For detailed instructions on how to get support, see Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

Thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding.

Ok just for the sake of completeness, in case someone might find this useful - after Windows crashing and the taskbar disappearing, I rebooted and logged in, only to find a black screen with nothing on it except the mouse cursor.

Long story short, I uninstalled Windows updates and features and somehow I was able to get in with Windows functioning normally.

After seeing your response, I tried to install Edge Webview2 again, this time right-clicking the file and running as an administrator. To my surprise, that went through fine and was completed without errors. I went ahead and installed Microsoft Teams, which was installed without errors. So far so good, I will see how I go.
