Microsoft Teams free account on desktop software

Hello everyone:

I'm trying to use Microsoft Teams free version and use it in the desktop version of teams.

After sign up with my email address, I try to sign in within the desktop software, I have the following message: "You are missing out! Ask your admin to enable Microsoft Teams."

I think my problem is that my free account and any new meeting made by this free account has the following URL: "https://teams.live.com/dl/launcher/....", these URLs could not be opened using teams desktop software, while any meeting with "https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/...." can be opened using teams desktop software.

1. Can I use teams desktop version using free account?

2. Can I create a meeting with "https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/...." using free account ?

3. Is "https://teams.live.com/" accounts and meetings are supported using desktop software ?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi Yahya

My name is Daniel. I will be more than happy to assist you.

As a fellow MS Community forum user, I understand how confusing it can be.

Sounds like you are trying to access MS Team free personal account via the MS Team desktop app.

When it comes to MS Team free, I'd like to let you know there are 2 types of accounts:
1. MS Team free personal account.
2. MS Team free organization account.
Please note, those 2 accounts are not the same. They are indeed different.

As of today, MS Team free personal account can be accessed without issue via MS Team mobile app and via MS Team online via web browser on the computer.

So if you want to access MS Team free personal account from your computer, you need to use a web browser and then visit: https://teams.live.com the reason for this not all MS Team free personal account users can access the MS Team desktop app.

Actually, MS Team free personal life account is targeted to be available on the MS Team desktop app in February 2021 but the current status is still in the rolling-out status and the official release has been delayed for a few months. Since the feature is still in the rolling-out status then that means there's a chance the feature is not available yet on your account: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/r...

As per the news page in the following link, the feature is predicted won't be ready until the second half of 2022. https://www.onmsft.com/news/microsoft-teams-mul...

So let's give more time for the engineering team to finish the feature, Hopefully, we will hear good news soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Having said that, if you want to use the MS Team desktop app, as of today, you can access it by using an MS Team free organization account. You can use the same email account for both MS Team free organization account & MS Team free personal account. Signing up for MS Team free personal account requires you to register a phone number but on the other hand, but signing up for an MS Team free organization account doesn't require you to register a phone number.

I'd also like to let you know, MS Team free organization account has more features compared to MS Team free personal account. So feel free to sign up for the MS Team free organization account to take advantage of the opportunity. The following article explains how to sign up for MS Teams free organization account: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sign...

You can access MS Team free organization account from MS Team mobile app, desktop app & via a web browser but it requires a different URL from I mentioned earlier above: https://teams.microsoft.com

Please note, as of today, only Chrome & Edge browsers are officially supported browsers for the MS Teams web app.

Hello Daniel:

I followed the steps on the article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sign-up-for-teams-free-70aaf044-b872-4c32-ac47-362ab29ebbb1, step by step with the exact same order, it did not work with me.

Once I enter the email address that I want to sign up with, the URL transform into teams.live.com.

The generated account has the URL: https://teams.live.com/, this is not supported using the windows desktop app.

If I'm not wrong, https://teams.live.com/ is for personal accounts, and since I can not create an organization free account with https://teams.microsoft.com/ , I will not be able to use the desktop app.

If I try to sign in at https://teams.microsoft.com/ with the same account, I directly move to teams.live.com

I would appreciate your try to create a free organization account, and see how you will be moved to create a personal account instead, with https://teams.live.com/ instead of https://teams.microsoft.com/

Thanks for your kindness.

Could you please mention the domain name of your account?
For unknown reasons to me, I find that some domain names have difficulties with MS Team free.

Just enough mention the domain name after @ sign (ie: Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo etc), please don't mention the full email address because it will be automatically redacted by the forum system to protect your privacy.

I did and retry but nothing changes.

In addition, I tried the process using new email account with a new laptop with fresh cash and history in the web browser, the same issue stand still.

May I ask if you tried to make a new organization free account and the generated link for the account and it becomes teams.microsoft.com ? I always ended up with a normal account with teams.live.com?

I asked one friend to make this process, he got the exact same problem. Note that he has a Mac device, but unlike teams windows app, the issue is fixed on the teams IOS app and he could sign in using a teams.live.com in the teams app.

This clearly indicates you have not successfully signed up for MS team free org account, So far you only have MS Team free personal life account.

To be honest, "I've seen this similar issue lately happen to other community members as well, I suspect it could be an intermittent issue. As an alternative, you can ask your friend to add you to Team: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-...

That said, I do believe this issue needs to be investigated furthermore by the MS Team engineering team so they can determine the best next steps for this particular issue.

I highly suggest you report this issue, If this is a bug normally they will release fixes but as a community advisor, I can't guarantee that for you since I don't work for Microsoft.

Follow these steps: Select Help > select report a problem
