I want to delete my work or school account as it's stopping me creating a personal teams account

I must have wrongly set up my Office 365 account details years ago as I seem to have a work or school account AND a personal account. I only want a personal account but it says I'm not the administrator of the work or school account! I don't know who else would be the administrator. I just want to delete the work or school account and have a personal account I can set up a teams account for.

Hi

My name is Daniel. I am an Independent Advisor.

Am I correct to assume you are getting this error message?
"Someone has already set up Teams for your organization" (See screenshot)

Yes, that's correct. It also says I need to speak to the administrator, but I'm the only person to be in control of this account.

May I ask, Are you trying to signup with your own domain (Domain you purchased on your own)? or Are you trying to sing up by using a public domain such as Outlook, Hotmail, Live etc? or Do you use a work/school account (which means someone else manages the domain, usually the IT dept)?

Thanks Daniel.

I'm trying to sign up using my own domain, which I purchased separately.

I have no need for a work/school account and can only assume I set this up in error in a previous year.

Yes, you can sign up with your own domain but it requires you to have an MS365 license.

Am I correct to assume you have an MS365 license in this case?

Yes. It was Office 365 but understand it's now called Microsoft 365.

I have had this for many years.

If you own your domain you need to do a domain takeover by updating the domain DNS with a TXT record on MS 365 admin center. Please replace "Your_Email_Address" in the following link with your actual email address: https://admin.microsoft.com/admintakeover?auth_...

Please note, since you need to login to MS 365 admin center, please make sure your MS365 subscription still valid.

Thanks Daniel.

I'm not quite sure what you mean re domain takeover. I have used my personal email address ( from the domain I purchased) since day one having a M365 account. Therefore, which other domain am I taking over? and what is the actual email address I've to use?

My office 365 subscription is still valid and was renewed last month for another year.

If you sign up with your private own domain you need to do a domain takeover because the system doesn't know if you are the real owner or not. The system will only be to identify that you are the owner by using the txt record.

If you sign up with a public domain such as Gmail, Outlook Yahoo etc then it's a different story. In that case, you don't need to perform a domain takeover because the system already knows that you are not the domain owner of Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo etc.

Daniel, I've gone through the process and it looks as if it has worked as Microsoft message said it's been successful. I've no idea what that was about (I'm a non-tech) but it said the changes might not impact for 15 mins or so. therefore, I'll leave for an hour and see if I can create a new teams account for this personal email address. Thanks for your help.

regards

Alan
