Hi Mickwest2016,

I assume you get this error when you open a document using Word application, and the document is stored in your online service or your local synced folder. You can follow the following and let me know if it helps.

1. Clear all IE browsing history. (In Internet Explorer, select the Tools button, point to Safety, and then select Delete browsing history. Choose the types of data or files you want to remove from your PC, and then select Delete.)

2. Exit your OneDrive sync client.

3. Browse to "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw" and delete all the content.

4. Go to "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache" and also delete all content of this folder. This is where all the cache of your files are stored.(it's ok if one or two items cannot be deleted).

5. After completing the above mentioned steps, please try opening the file again.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information:

1. The detailed steps you did before you got this error.

2. Your Word application version number. (Go to File > Account and capture a screenshot of the version.)

3. Where is the document stored?

4. Does this issue only occur to one file?

5. A screenshot of the error.

Regards,
James
