Two documents, both 1.5 line spacing, different look

I recently experienced a problem in adjusting line spacing.

Normally when I open a new document, type some words and adjust the line spacing to 1.5, there will be an increased white space above and below the words I typed.

However I recently received a document of which the line spacing is also 1.5, but the upper part / white space above the words disappeared.

How can I changed the normal 1.5 line spacing into the one where the upper white space is cut? Thanks.
Here are two print-screen pictures of them

Since you're not displaying formatting marks, I can't tell whether those lines are wrapped or end in paragraph breaks. If the latter, then Before/After spacing may be a factor. You might also check the Compatibility Options to see if there are discrepancies. There are some options that affect line spacing (though actually none that should affect Multiple line spacing).

Thanks.

Those lines are wrapped.  I am not sure if it happened because of differences between Mac/PC version Word, but I have checked their paragraph and font settings and surprisingly they are identical.

If you would like to view the files, I have zipped them and uploaded the zip file onto sendspace.

The "think.docx" file is the one where the upper white space is not cut, while the "thin.docx" is the one with the white space cut out.

Well, this is very intriguing. There are actually quite a few differences in the Layout Options for the two files: thin.docx has none of the boxes checked, while think.docx has quite a few, some of which suggest an origin in an Asian country. Here are the ones that are checked:

  • Add space for underlines.
  • Adjust line height to grid height in the table.
  • Balance SBCS and DBCS characters.
  • Convert backslash characters into yen signs.
  • Don't expand character spaces on a line that ends with SHIFT-RETURN.
  • Draw underline on trailing spaces.

The curious thing, however, is that disabling any one or even all of these options makes no difference in the line spacing. You are correct that all the Paragraph settings are identical, and I also checked the Font formatting to see if there was any expansion (though this would give a different effect).

In addition, the "thin" version also has tighter spacing if you single-space both documents. I would suspect different line spacing with different fonts, but they both use TNR 12, so that's not the answer.

I think you may be on the right track in thinking the Mac/PC version may be a factor, if one of the documents was created in Macword, but it is definitely bizarre. In any case, if you need to make the line spacing identical, you can use Exactly rather than Multiple spacing.

I believe that there is an option, with Asian languages, to have text align to a grid. I'm wondering if that could be issue here. I don't have Asian language supported installed, so I can't check those options, though.

I thought maybe that was the Compatibility Option to "Adjust line height to grid height," but disabling that didn't make any difference.
