Word 2016 crashes

I recently purchased a new ASUS laptop with Windows 10 o/s.  I have downloaded and installed MS Office pro plus 2016 through the student advantage programme.  Each time I try to open a blank document in word it crashes, seeks a fix from Microsoft, fails and then shuts down.  It has also crashed mid way through working on documents.  When I open the blank document the screen almost instantly goes black for a second and then comes back on before seeking a fix.  It isn't doing this with excel, ppt and outlook, although I am not using them anywhere near as much as word.  I have reloaded the s/w 4 or 5 times, I have used the quick repair and online repair through settings with no success.  The only other stuff I have installed is mendeley (referencing s/w) printer driver (Samsung) and antivirus (F-Secure Safe).  Windows updates are all up to date.

The event log shows the following:

WINWORD.EXE
16.0.6965.2092
57f2d361
igd10iumd32.dll
10.18.15.4256

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igd10iumd32.dll

Many thanks in advance.

Answer

The faulting module, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igd10iumd32.dll, is an Intel HD Graphics driver. I think the number 10.18.15.4256 is the version of that file, which would mean that it's seriously out of date.

Visit https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26229/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen- Under the "Not sure what to download?" heading, use the link to the driver update utility to make sure this (version 15) is correct for your hardware; it may point you to a different page. Install the update and then try running Word.
