Word 2016 Mouse Pointer broken over Italic, tables, on empty area of document..

Hello,

a lot of people seem to have that problem, but there seems no solution or update from MS, therefore here an additional post including photos. The Cursor is broken in Office2016 / 365 abo since several month. It worked fine before and the problem appeared out of nowhere.

Description: The classic cursor is fine. Any other cursor seems to be scaled to a tiny spot or even disappearing:

Over normal text: No Problem:

Over Italics: No Photo available as there is simply no cursor any more!

On "resizing Tables":

Just left side of text sheet:

.. any many more.. ANNOYING!

The small cursors are embarrassing for Word/MS but no real problem - but all the disappearing cursor positions and wide areas like on complete emtpy pages on 43" screen drives me crazy!

I changed scaling: No effect

I reinstalled: No effect

I updated all drivers : No effect

"Word Pad" is running fine, even over italics!

I changed cursor styles: no effect (beside classic cursor, of course!)

Machine: i5-6600, 4K Display, Win10.

Hi Stefan,

Word may not work as expected if there are issues within the app such as broken app components or add-ins causing software conflicts. To isolate the issue, please answer the following questions:

  • When did the issue start?
  • Were there any changes made to your computer prior to the issue?
  • Are other Office apps affected?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you follow these troubleshooting steps and see if the issue still persists:

  1. Install Office updates. Installing optimal updates can help resolve issues by replacing outdated files.
  2. Launch Excel in safe mode. Here's how: Press the Windows key + R key, type excel /safe, then click OK. It lets you safely use Excel without encountering certain startup programs. If the issue does not occur in safe mode, disable the application add-ins and COM add-ins one at a time to check which add-in causes the issue.
  3. Repair your Office application. Repairing your Office application can resolve issues with Word not responding, hanging or freezing by automatically repairing app components.

We're looking forward to your response.

Hi, thx for reply.

  • Cant tell you exactly when this started. Feels like about 4 month now.
  • Yes, i'm working with my PC and thereby there are changes. Most changes are automatic updates from MS.
  • Seems to be Word only so far
  • I reinstalled, updated (its always newest version), i repaired (quick and than again with download). I tried to install a older build without success.
  • I started safe mode by pressing control while starting.
  • I changes mouse pointer preferences a lot.
  • Today, after some additional hours of testing, comparing preferences to my laptop, trying different display and wasting additional time i found a temporary solution:

Go to Display -> Scaling -> Choose a CUSTOM scaling (for example 111%) - thereby i was forced to log off and on again - and Win10 seems to be triggered for calculating (maybe rendering new icons?) something in the background - and voilà, the cursors/mouse pointers is fixed. Going back to 125% is ok for that moment.

EDIT: I was just testing Word again after a restart - and the pointers are broken again !

Please fix this!

And some more information: On 300% scaling, word is blurry as hell (Chrome and Taskbar and Desktop Icons are clear!) and there the ultra-tiny cursors are back again - but now scaled to 100% while the rest is all 300% - There is something fundamentally wrong with the scaling - or Word simply is not ready for 4K pixels?

Thank you for providing us the information requested. As of now, 4K resolution is not yet available to work with Office 365. As we strive for improvement on our products, you may post this on the Office 365 UserVoice. This is the platform where our software engineers and developers take our consumers' valuable feedback regarding our products to improve it and our future releases.

Please let us know if you need further assistance.

Sorry, i don't want to be unkind to you. But what resolution does Microsoft support in the year 2018? 1024x786 px? maybe i should try a PS/2 mouse?

Are you absolutly sure that is not a bug but a special feature in the future? And should i beg developers to support a state-of-the-art display? maybe?

Now I know why our company sticks with win7 and office 2010 (I am the only Win10 / Office 2016 User among 200 scientists & staff). I'll creep back to admins and ask for a downgrade. They told me. This sucks.

Sorry, I know you want to help. So, thanks anyway.

I started to experience exactly the same problem in Word  just recently.

What makes it difficult is it is hard to describe the problem. I think it is wide spread systemic problem with MS Office 2016 , but people calling it and describing differently and therefor it will take time for MS to realize and reproduce it.

This is a common issue reportet multiple times. I am quite sure this is not cause by user or installations as these are done multiple times dayly by our IT appartment. I assume we have to await the next Windows/ Office update (hopefully someone in the background team already knows about this.

Same issue here and it's indeed not simple to describe it. First of all you have to actually see the cursor. A lot of people may think it just disappears but it's just extremely tiny. Second, it only happens in certain situations (I usually have it when reading emails in outlook when they are written in an italic font).

It's extremely annoying as more and more laptops in our organization are moving to 4k screens and not having a cursor visible when reading or replying emails (or writing in Word) is really frustrating.

I really hope this is taken care of soon.
