Word 2016 - Loads a blank screen

Hi there

I have recently updated W10 to the latest update (well it actually updated automatically - which is really annoying :) )

Since that update, I have 3 issues:

  1. Microsoft word 2106 documents all now load with a blank page (even if i open a presaved document) which makes it unusable (see screenshot below)
  2. Excel 2016 does the same as above
  3. Google Chrome loads with a black screen - not sure why but I have found a temporary fix for this

I was wondering if anyone else has the issue or can give any advice to resolve?

I run W10 on a Acer Predator gaming laptop (so its definitely not a memory issues)

I have tried restarting, reinstalling office, ran Microsoft's online repair function and closed the program completely through task manager and reopened. All of which did not work.

Any help would be greatly received as it is impacting my ability to work - in fact I have had to download the openoffice version :)

Cheers

Dan

Hi Doug,

Because my screen loads completely blank, I am unable to access the options bar to do these steps :(

I have just done an OFFCat scan which has automatically disabled some add-ins (not sure what this is) but still no change.

Im still trying things though published on this site by other users

Highly frustrating! im nearly at the point to going to buy a Macbook lol

Hi Joan

Thanks for this. I ran this scan and got the error:

"Word add-ins have been disabled due to performance or stability issues. To see the list of disabled add-ins, click the Configuration Details tile (above) and then search for 'Disabled Add-ins' using the Find feature."

The advice page took me to https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/2758876/add-ins-are-user-re-enabled-after-being-disabled-by-office-programs BUT i cannot even get into Word to play around witht he add-ins as it is still a blank screen

So im not sure what to do :(

Hi Joan

I have also looked at this thread about disabling graphics acceleration - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_word-mso_win10-mso_365hp/all-microsoft-office-products-open-to-a-white/356177cd-7807-46ea-9f62-3c63fb15cfc9

However, I cannot even see or access the task bar on my applications.

I have tried loading the program in safe mode and thenI can see the task bar options but when you click file, the whole screen or program goes blank again

Cheers

What happens when you click on the File tab, which appears in the screen shot in your original post?

Also, if you click on the View tab and then check the Ruler box, does the ruler extend off the screen?

I can get a similar appearance to your screen shot if I set the paper size to A3 landscape and turn off the ruler

The top of your screenshot is cut off, so it is not possible to see if there is a name for the document such as the Document 9 - Word at the top of my screenshot.

You might try renaming the Normal.dotm template to OldNormal.dotm and the re-start Word.

Hope this helps,

Hi Doug

Thanks for the quick reply.

I now only get a blank screen (as below) when i try and load a normal word doc. Sometimes it will load with a task bar in safe mode but then go blank again when you click anything.

But when you click 'file' or 'view', it just goes blank to a similar state as when i try and open any document

Where can i find the template files relating to this comment "You might try renaming the Normal.dotm template to OldNormal.dotm and the re-start Word."

Cheers

Dan
