My Styles Pane has become double-spaced

Hi.

My Styles Pane has suddenly become double-spaced, looking like there's a blank line between every Style in the list. This is horrific! This wastes so much space that I've lost nearly half the styles that I used to be able to see. It definitely did not look like this yesterday.

Is there a setting or something that got flipped? Please, please tell me I can change something to get back the Styles listing in the previous single-spaced look, like a normal list box?

Hi Armin,

I'm sorry to tell you that this is how the Styles Pane (styles list) works these days. It is the same in Word 2010 and 2013 at least, so it may be a function of a Windows setting.

You can make a multi-column list if you can spare the room.

You can post a suggestion on UserVoice.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions or require further help.

Regards

Charles, you're right that "this is the way it works now", but it isn't the same as in previous versions or even in previous builds of Word 2016. In the screen shots below, the pane on the left is from Version 1803 build 9126.2275 (Semi-annual Channel Targeted) and the one on the right is from Version 1808 build 10730.20088 (Monthly Channel Targeted). Both of these builds are from the Office Insider program, but there are lots of users in the same situation.

You can see that for the same size text and the same size panel, the newer build displays five fewer style names.

I suspect that this spacing is intended to make it easier for touch-screen users to select a style from the list, but this is worse than useless for mouse users as it requires a lot more scrolling.

I used the File > Feedback page in Word to send a complaint, and suggested that the extra spacing should appear only if Word is in touch mode instead of mouse mode. Everyone who agrees should send the same suggestion through both Feedback and UserVoice to get Microsoft's attention.

I just tested here, in Office 365 ProPlus, and the problem seems to be fixed. The version is 1808 and the build is 10730.20102 (monthly channel).

It should be noted that I am unable to display the pane in multiple columns.

Just took the time to download the latest version of Office 365 as suggested above (it took forever!), but my Styles Pane is still double-spaced. This is soooooo annoying, especially when trying to work on a laptop window.

Why does Microsoft continually "fix" things that aren't BROKEN??? C'mon MS, fix this! I really need to see more than a few Styles when writing technical documents!

Thank you, but I'm also unable to get multiple columns. I just get one super wide column, instead.

Thanks. I did indeed use File > Feedback to lodge my complaint against this change.

Hmm. I seem to have the most current version that I can get (same build as yours, but Office 365), and there are no other updates. The issue still persists. I wonder what I could have going on differently that you are good and I'm not.

(Also, I notice I'm on 32-bit. I wonder if there's a 64-bit I can change to? I'll have to check.)

I'm running 32 bit myself (which is the default type of installation), so that probably isn't relevant here.

That said, there are certainly known differences between Office Professional and Office Home. For example, the new grammar check (the so-called Editor) hasn't been implemented in Office Professional (yet).

However, the strange thing here is that I was initially able to reproduce the issue with the Styles pane, and then it fixed itself. I assumed it was fixed by an update.

I'm running 64-bit Windows Home 10 (v.1803) and MS Office 365 Business (v.1808), and my Word  'Styles Pane' is still double spaced.

You do not want to be changing to 64-bit for this!

Yes, you could change, but this would not. Also 64-bit is not any better and for many purposes is worse than 32-bit in Word.
