Office 2010 "Template Download Error"

When I try to download template in word/powerpoint/excel, it always gives me error:

Template Download Error
The template cannot be downloaded. To fix this problem, do the following:
  • Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet .
  • Make sure your browser is not in offline mode.
  • Try to download the template again later.
I have tried all the suggestions and I even took several step further trying to figure the problem, I draw several assumptions on the cause of problems.

Potential cause of problem:
1) Firewall
2) Browser Settings
3) Updates

For point 1) firewall, I figured some would say might be to do with firewall settings so I completely disabled my firewall and I was greeted with the same error again.

As for point 2), on default I use firefox as my primary browser but I figure maybe its a firefox compatilbilty problem, so I changed to IE9 to see if the problem presist. Guess what? the error showed itself again if not I probably wouldn't be here.

and point 3), I also checked all available updates for both Windows 7 and office and there was nothing available.

I even took another step (more than several steps by now) further to try to repair my office 2010 with the office installer, yet the error prevailed,

At this point I am not too sure what is the problem anymore. I would appreciate if any technical support could help to verify the problem. At this point, some support might suggest that I could download it from the microsoft template website. I would appreciate if I don't get a second best option, I want my product to work as it is intented to.

Quick note, I bought windows 7 and office in family pack, the strange thing is my partner who installed the same office, same anti-virus software, same internet connection and same almost everything managed to download templates without error prompts. I mean what is this? this is somewhat reidiculous to me.

I am sorry if I sounded rude or offensive, it was not my intention to do so. Clearly I am just frustrated as a customer who purchased Microsoft products and not able to utilise it funtionality to the fullest. I hope you would understand and look at it from my prespective. I have read many solutions before posting this question, I have seen numerous suggestion for office 2007 to install the SP2, but nothing concerete to fix 2010 problem!

Thanks if someone could provide a solution to fix the problem.

This issue has been reported earlier. I don't know of a permanent fix, but a workaround is to manually download the template that you want from the Templates section at Office online: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/?CTT=97.

Hey Stefan

I think I might have found the problem to my case, but I would still need your help to resolve it! :) So here it is, I tried uninstalling my anti virus (bitdefender internet security 2012) and out of miracle I am able to download the templates without problem again.

Given the vulnerablity of a Windows environment, I would still need to install back the anti virus. Do you have any idea which firewall settings or application I need to allow in my anti-virus settings? simply put, you have any idea what application is responsible for the template download process so that I could allow it on my firewall settings.

One thing is really strange, I have allow all the same appllication rules on my PC the same as my partners using the same anti virus however I still couldn't download template though.

Thanks!

The problem could be a setting with the antivirus program or with the firewall; I can't tell as I've never used Bitdefender internet security. See if the manufacturer's web site lists any known issues with bitdefender and Word. Or perhaps you can look at your partner's installation and see if there are any different settings applied?

Alternatively, you could use an alternative antivirus program. Microsoft Security Essentials seems to do the job, and it works with Windows firewall.

Glad I ran onto this thread even though it's some six years old.  I was having the "Template Download Error" as others have described.  I'm using Excel 2010.  The tip about shutting off the antivirus worked for me.  I'm using AVG 17.5.3022.  I right-clicked on the AVG icon down in the tray and clicked on the "Protection is On" slide switch to turn the A/V off.  I downloaded my Template and clicked the slide switch again to turn Protection back ON.  Thanks for the tip!!
