.docx to .doc how do I change them?

I have Microsoft Office 2010 and all of the documents are saved as .docx but my professor wants them to be submitted as .doc

How do I change this so that my documents are saved as .doc instead of .docx?

Answer
Answer

To set .doc as the default format for new documents:

  • Activate the File tab of the ribbon, then click Options.
  • Click Save in the navigation pane of the Word Options dialog.
  • In the 'Save files in this format' dropdown list, select 'Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)', then click OK.

To save existing .docx documents as .doc:

  • Open a document.
  • Activate the File tab of the ribbon.
  • Click Save As.
  • In the 'Save as type' dropdown list, select 'Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)'.
  • If you wish, specify another location and/or filename.
  • Click Save.

Under the File tab you will see "Save As" which when you click on it gives you the option to change the file type. You want the .doc file type for Word 97-2003 documents.

You may want to change your compatibility options to save all document this way until you are done with your class. It will keep you from using some features of Word 2010 that don't work in earlier versions but you can't use them in the documents for this class anyway.
