Cannot link charts "Word cannot obtain the data for the Excel.Sheet.12 link"

Hi!
I am runnning OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro. My version of the Office for Mac 2011 is fully updated.

I cannot paste a chart as a link on any word document. I get the following error message:

"Word cannot obtain the data for the Excel.Sheet.12 link"

I have looked it up online and, as far as I can tell no one seems to have an answer.
Could anyone help me with this?

Pasting the chart as picture is not an option for me. I am continuously updating both the excel and word documents.

Thanks for the help!

Answer
No offense but I don't know how to state it much more succinctly than before :-)

  1. Copy in Excel
  2. Paste in Word

The default result is a Linked chart object.

As John indicated, though, there are some bugs that can't be overcome:

  • When you want to update the chart object in the document you need to use Edit> Links in Word. The Link cannot be set to update Automatically even though the option in the Links dialog suggests that it can be -- selection of the option will not 'stick'.
  • When you open the Word document there is no notification that the file contains a link, so you have to remember to update the link manually [as described above].
