Word 2016 Label Outlines

Create a label in Word 2016 and the page is blank... table cells are no longer highlighted like they were in Word 2011.

Selecting Gridlines from the View menu causes the document to display a grid of squares...

Word ➢ Preferences ➢ View  Show  Text boundaries

...displays the border of each label.

However, when finished, one must turn this preference off again or a text boundary will appear in every document.

Dumb.

Office 2011 for the Mac did not exhibit this behaviour.

Answer
Answer

Labels in Word are generated as a Table, so the Gridlines command you want is the one that pertains to the Table of labels.

Click in the Table, then go to the Layout contextual tab & click the View Gridlines button on the left end of the Ribbon. Optionally, select Gridlines from the Table menu.

The Gridlines referred to on the View tab are for drawing/alignment purposes. Text Boundaries also do not pertain specifically to Tables, although they do cause the Table Gridlines to be displayed if that preference is enabled.
