If you have snow leopard it s even easier than that.

click on the word icon in the Dock and hold.

this window will pop up that looks like this:

Click on the item I have orange item drawn to.

One likely possibility:

Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu. In the Accounts Panel, select the Login Items pane. Delete Word from the list.
