opening old version of word

I just subscribed to 365 personal and in buying a new computer did not transfer my old versions of word applications.  so now trying to open those old word documents using 365.  does that work or do I need to transfer old versions of word (2011 or earlier)?

Word 2016 (part of Office 365) can open documents created in earlier versions of Word, going back as far as Word 97-2003 at least).
