I received a new iPad and logged into my Microsoft Account, I'm trying to open  DocX files in Word on my iPad opens them but tells me "This document has certain edit capabilities that have been locked."  I did not have this problem on my previous iPad, so I'm not sure what has changed.


I don't want to make a copy of the files - I want to edit the original.  Any insights or suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • Are you trying to launch a Word Office application or trying to open it through Office Online?
  • Does the issue occur on  a particular document only?
  • Where did you get the exact error message?
  • Where do you get the Word document that you are trying to access?
  • Did you already try to access the Word document on another device to check if you are still experiencing the same issue?

I'm on my iPad trying to open it through the Word  App

Happens with some documents, but not with others

The error message shows up across the top of the document

Tried several documents - some that I had saved on my iPad, some that were emailed to me

I only receive this error on my iPad

With regard to your concern, we suggest that you uninstall and reinstall Office application on your device. This will help resolve your concern when an Office application is not working properly.

That does not solve the problem.  It is an App on an iPad.
