Duplicate/Clone a SharePoint Online Site

Hello

I have a SharePoint online page where MS teams got activated by one of the administrators and we have to recreate the site to get rid of it.

I wonder if it is possible to duplicate the current SharePoint online site we and all of it's files somehow or do we have to recreate the Site and thne move the files from the old page to the new page after ?

Hi Michael,

Thank you for posting your question in this community.

Generally, we can save a SharePoint site as a template in SharePoint Online so that we can reuse the site design, layouts in the future. When you save the site as a template, these are the objects and features will be saved into the template:

For your information:

Save, download, and upload a SharePoint site as a template

However, as you mentioned it is a SharePoint site “where MS teams got activated”, In this case, you should site should be a Microsoft 365 group connected site.

In this scenario, it is not feasible to save the site as template, as Save site as template feature is only available in a non-Microsoft 365 group connected site (You won’t be able to see “Save site as template” option in Site settings). I am afraid you need to recreate a site without Microsoft 365 group from scratch, then save as a template. Then you can reuse the site template in the future.

===========================================

Here are some additional information, which may help you.

To create a modern SharePoint site with Microsoft 365 group, make sure you are a global admin or SharePoint admin of your tenant.

Go to SharePoint admin center > Sites> Create > Other options to create a site based on the template you need without a Microsoft 365 group.

After you create the site without a Microsoft 365 group, you may still not be able to see “Save site as template” under Site settings, Site actions. This is because you need to enable custom script for your tenant and site.

To enable custom script for the tenant, you need to go to SharePoint admin center > Settings > classic settings page > select “Allow users to run custom script on personal sites” and “Allow users to run custom script on self-service created sites”

For your information:

To allow custom script on OneDrive or user-created sites

To enable custom script for the site without Microsoft 365 group, you need to run PowerShell command for this site:

Set-SPOsite <YourSiteURL> -DenyAddAndCustomizePages 0

For your information:

To allow custom script on other SharePoint sites

Then you should be able to save site as template for the future use.

Best regards,

Dihao
