Sharepoint Online/O365 - Documents open read only issue

Split from this thread.

I have a similar issue.  When major-minor versioning where only people with write access can see the draft documents is enabled, it seems that the synchronised folders are read-only, even for people with write access.  If you open the document in Word, you get the same effect.  Thus, that setting is not very useful and rather defeats the object, doesn't it? The only solution is to save the document elsewhere and then upload it.  Is this really what was wanted?

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your reply and sorry for my delay.

According to my test, even the users who have edit permission, they cannot edit the old version in version history.

They can just edit in the file and save as a new document. If you turn on content approval for this library, then the newly saved document will show as draft and need to approve.

Yes, the old version history is archive actually. It is not feasible to edit in the minor version and save the change to it. Only when I edit in the major file, the minor versions will be created.
