I need to open and edit pdf files from sharepoint Online

I have a SharePoint online (Office 365) doc library with pdf files.  The users need to be able to click on a document and have it open in BlueBeam the same way a docx files opens in Word. They need to be able to check in and check out the document, make edits, save it back to the server, and then close the file, the same way it works with Word.  I've done extensive research into this only to find out I need to edit the DOCICON.xml file on the SP server.  Since I'm on SharePoint online, I'm not able to do that.

any help would be greatly appreciated.    I'm using BlueBeam, SharePoint Online 2013, and IE 11

thanks,

Answer

Hi Digvijay,

It is not feasible to open PDF documents in client application from SharePoint Online directly.

About this requirement, we suggest you vote for this idea in SharePoint UserVoice. It is the best way for users to submit feature requests to related team and help better our products and services.

As a workaround, you can try using Open with Explorer command to open your SharePoint library in your File Explorer first, then open PDF files with client application to edit it. You should be able to check in and out the documents when using the client application.

a. for libraries with classic experience, under LIBRARY tab, click Open with Explorer button.

b. for modern SharePoint libraries, click All Documents>View in File Explorer.

To find more information, see Use the Open with Explorer command section in this article: Ways to work with site library files in File Explorer.

Thanks for your understanding.
