Artistic effects and background removal links are grayed out and don't work when I insert pictures.

In Office 2010, my 'Artistic Effects' and 'Background Removal' links are grayed out and don't work when I insert pictures(jpeg, gif, or png).  This is the case  in all my Office programs.  This is very frustrating because those features are the only reason that I decided to upgrade from 2007.

Any solutions would be great.

Do you have the picture selecte or the slide? How did you insert the pictures? Does this happen only on existing presentations or new ones also?

Also, check the title bar of the presentation: Is it in compatibility mode?
