Outlook keeps downloading spam from Gmail

Is there any way to stop Outlook 365 from downloading all the spam from my Gmail account? Outlook 2010 didn't do this, it downloaded the inbox only.

Hi Dennis,

  • How is the email account configured (IMAP or POP)?
  • Are you using any virus scanner which integrates itself with Outlook?

Try starting the computer in the Clean Boot and check if any other software is conflicting with
the Outlook 2013.

Check this link for more information on starting the computer in Clean Boot mode:

Note: After the troubleshooting, restart the computer in Normal mode as suggested in this
article.

You may also create a new profile in Outlook and check. To know how to create a new profile for Outlook, refer to the link below:

Reply with more information to assist you further.

Thank you.

I have an IMAP account using gmail.

I have no virus scanner running.

What does "clean boot" have to do with this question? I only want to stop the Spam folder in gmail from downloading to Outlook. There are 388 spam messages just from today. We have a slow DSL connection so Outlook is wasting time downloading messages I don't want. How I can I stop it?

When I right click the "Spam" folder listed under [Gmail] on the left pane, the delete option is grayed out so I can't delete this folder.

Also, when I display the IMAP folder and attempt to Unsubscribe [Gmail]/Spam, this message appears: "Cannot unsubscribe from folder. [Gmail]/Spam is a special folder and cannot be unsubscribed from in Outlook." Is there any way I can go to gmail and make it not special?

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Once you login to the Gmail, do you find these emails in the inbox?

Login to the Gmail webmail and check if you are able to block these spam mails.

Thank you.

I have this same issue. I just upgrade from Office 2003 to Office 2016. The spam that is being downloaded is in gmail's spam folder. My old Outlook 2003 never downloaded this junk, but my new Office 2016 does. Where is the option to turn it off?

Depends on the type of gmail account, I assume IMAP, that being the case the options are available, by accessing your Gmail account/settings via your browser and amending the gmail handling of spam settings

Thank you! I didn't realize the difference between IMAP and POP3 accounts. I let outlook automatically configure the folder, and it did it as an IMAP. I deleted that account, and set it back up manually as a POP3 account, which I now understand will only download the inbox (which is all I need.) Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

A pop mail account downloads all mail from the server, unless you set the option to 'keep a copy on the server'

And it wont be in sync across other devices, whereas an IMAP account will

No, the pop mail account does NOT download the gmail spam folder, it only downloads the inbox (verified personally today, and also what other people have said on the internet.)

You make a good point about the IMAP account, but I only access my mail on a single device, so I have no use for that feature.

I also read that older versions of Office had the option to pick the folders that downloaded from IMAP, but that feature has been taken away, so now there is no way to keep the gmail spam folder from downloading if one is using IMAP.  Using a pop account is the only way I've seen to stop the spam folder from downloading.
