Outlook 2013 New mail notification icon but no new e-mail

In Outlook 2013, I sometimes receive the new mail notification 'envelope' icon overlaying my Windows taskbar Outlook icon and the envelope icon also in the Windows taskbar tray.  Double-clicking this second icon only takes me to Outlook 2013, but not the unread e-mail in question.

I've looked all through my inbox folders and sub-folders and cannot find any new message.

Sometimes, e-mails do not show up in my inbox but in the folder they were sent to by a custom rule that I have created.

Is there a way to go directly to that new e-mail from the notification icon, or a feature within Outlook 2013 that shows all unread e-mail in your account, similar to the feature in Google's G-Mail?

Hi Jim,

Let us create a search folder in Outlook 2013 with criteria to show Unread emails and check if it helps.

For more information on how to create a search folder, refer to the following link:

I hope the above information helps. If you need further assistance, you may reply and I’ll be happy to assist you.

Thank you

Hi Girish,

Thanks for your tips.  I tried that feature out and although it is somewhat handy, it doesn't actually solve the underlying problem, although I now know what is causing it.

If I receive some unread e-mails inbox that I know will never read, I delete them before opening them.  When they go to the 'Deleted' folder, they are still in an unread state.  These are the e-mails that are causing the New Mail Notification icon to still remain in both the taskbar and system tray.

They also don't show up in the 'Unread E-mail' feature that you instructed me to use earlier, even when it looks through all Outlook mailbox items, it won't show the ones in the 'Deleted' folder.

Is there a way to get Outlook to refrain from displaying the New Mail Notification icon and ignore any unread emails in the 'Deleted' folder?

Agreed, this is a very frustrating "feature".  I receive hundreds of emails in a day and have many rules set up to auto-delete certain messages.  I cannot simply unsubscribe from them as they are set via distribution groups at my work.  I never know when I truly have a new email as the icon is always showing due to unread deleted items.

I can't believe the there is so many problems with notifications with Outlook 2013. Really like Outlook, but not everyone wants to open Outlook every few minutes to see if something is there, when this program should be doing it, itself.

Try this instead.

In File, Options, Mail, Arrival, disable 'Display an alert'.

In your existing rules, enable the action 'Stop processing more rules'.

Add a new rule at the end with actions to display an alert and / or make a sound.  Since you stopped processing rules for the previous exceptions, the only incoming messages that will trigger this rule are the ones you haven't already processed.

What if you receive new mail that isn't filtered through a rule?  Will there still be a notification for it? i.e. random unsorted mail that goes directly to your inbox.

Specify the 'Alert' rule to apply to all incoming messages so there will be no unfiltered messages.  By stopping the processing on messages covered by previous rules, the only messages that will trigger the alert are those that haven't tripped all previous rules.  That's why you put the 'Alert' rule last.

This isn't untested; I've been doing it for years.

this bug still exists and is worse than described...I often get the "new mail icon" on my taskbar and I have no unread emails in my deleted folder or anywhere else....the only way I can clear it is send a new email and then read it

This is very annoying.  I have not been able to find a solution.

In the meantime, I right-click the Deleted Items folder and click Empty Folder.  Whether there is mail in this folder or not, it will clear the New Mail Notifications.

Microsoft - please look into and fix this bug, it is very annoying!

Thank you
