Hi, I could not find scanpst in any of the places given here, and the windows file search did not detect it either.  I have a 64 bit machine running 32 bit Office 2010, and I eventually found it in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14

Search found SCANPST.EXE for me even though Explorer wouldn't show it in any of the commonly-known locations.  I copied it to the Desktop so I wouldn't have to hunt for it again.  But, when I tried to run SCANPST.EXE, I got this:

"SCANPST.EXE - System Error
The program can't start because AppVIsvSubsystems32.dll is missing

from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this

problem."

So, I did a Search for AppVIsvSubsystems32.dll and Search also found it even though SCANPST.EXE apparently couldn't.  I copied this .dll to the Desktop and tried again to run SCANPST.EXE.  This time, it came up with this error message:

"The program can't start because AppVIsvStream32.dll is missing from

your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

And, Search doesn't find this second .dll.  Any ideas what is happening here, or where I could get a copy of that .dll?  I Googled that filename & found discussion of problems involving it with Word, also with 32-bit apps running on a 64 bit machine.

ScanPST is intended to be run in the folder where it was installed. There's a reason that programs have an "install process" which involves a whole lot more then just copying files to some location.

Suggest you repair Office configuration.

It actually is on your computer, it's part of Microsoft Office. You're unable to see it because it's a hidden file and you have Windows Explorer hiding these files.

What you have to do first is use Windows Explorer and click on Tools > Folder Options. Then click on the View tab. Click the radio button Show Hidden Files and Folders. Uncheck the box Hide Known File Extensions. Click Apply. Click Apply to All Folders. Click Yes. Click OK.

Now you can do a file search for scanpst.exe. First, ensure Outlook is closed and even check your Task Manager > Processes to verify. Click on Start. In Search Programs and Files, type in scanpst.exe and then hit enter. Once it's located, double-click it. Follow the instructions.

The repair may be time-consuming. If the repair process finds errors and repairs them, repeat it when done. When the repair no longer finds any errors, you can close it and then open Outlook and use Outlook to open your archive.

MS is always helpful. I only wish that it was not so difficult to find the answers. Why does the scan.pst need to be a hidden file? It is tool to fix problems with email files.

This process worked except SCANPST.exe wasn't located where MS said it was.  I found it at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16.

That's exactly where Microsoft says it's located for Office 2016 click-to-run installations.

No one should ever download scanpst.exe from any web site. There's no need, because it is always included with Outlook and downloads from random web sites can compromise your computer.

This is the default location:

  • Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
    C:\Users\%username%\Documents\Outlook Files

Incorrect. Another MVP that needs to be released from the starting lineup.
