Office 365 Outlook Web Access - SMIME

Hello,

I'm using Outlook Web Access a lot of the time for email via our cloud based O365.  I have 2 questions I'm finding difficult to find the answer for, these being:

1. If someone sends me a digitally signed email, I received "This message has a digital signature, but it wasn't verified because the S/MIME control isn't currently supported for your browser or platform."  How do I go about viewing this? I get it on all browsers.  I've tried clicking on the '...' More options menu options, but nothing there.

2. I'm actually thinking about using my own Digital Signatures for sending email, how do you do this on the cloud version of O365? Again I couldn't really find any information once I have the certificate.

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

Here are answers to your questions:
1.    Regarding how to view the digitally signed email, you can refer to the following article:
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Encrypt-messages-by-using-S-MIME-in-Outlook-Web-App-2e57e4bd-4cc2-4531-9a39-426e7c873e26?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US
2.    About how to use your own Digital Signatures for sending email, you can also refer to the above article I provided. If you are not able to find useful information in it, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks,
Mouran

Hi Mouran,

Thanks for getting back to me, however when I go try and install the SMIME control by following the below, I don't have any options for Encrypt this message when clicking on '...' and looking at show message options.

"If you do not have the S/MIME control installed, and receive an encrypted or digitally signed message, you’ll be prompted to install the control when you open the message. Alternatively, if you do not have the S/MIME control installed, you can create a new message and select more options > Message options and select Encrypt this message (S/MIME). You will then be prompted to install the S/MIME control."

Any other ideas?

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

Did you close and reopen Outlook Web App before using the S/MIME control? As the article mentions, you will have to close and reopen OWA before you can use the S/MIME control.

Thanks,
Mouran

Hi Mouran,

Yes I did, as well as trying a number of browsers will no luck.  When I go to message options I see nothing talking about S/MIME.

Any other ideas?  I'm using Office 365 for business?

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

I’d like to confirm the following information to help you narrow down the issue:

1.Please try to start InPrivate browsing to see if it works.

2.As the “What else do I need to know” part of this article mentioned, Internet Explorer 9 or later is required to send and receive encrypted messages. It is also required to digitally sign messages that you send, and to verify digital signatures on messages that you receive.

Please make sure the browsers you are using are the latest.

3.When you receive an encrypted or digitally signed message, are you prompted to install the control when you open the message?

4.A screenshot about “When I go to message options I see nothing talking about S/MIME.”

5.If possible, please do the same on another PC to check if it works.

Regards,

Monique

Hello,

1. I've tried in InPrivate mode and still see the same issue.

2. I've tried Edge, Chrome and Firefox, all showing the same message

3. No I'm not prompted, I only get the message saying the S/MIME control isn't supported on this browser.

4. I've just went to look and as of this morning I no longer have a message options screen to look at.  So not sure if Microsoft have pushed out a new O365 update ?

5. Tried on a few machines (including VM's and still same issue)

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your updates.

I notice that you have tried Edge, Chrome and Firefox web browsers but not mentioned whether you have tried Internet Explorer 9 or above. Please try it because S/MIME is unsupported for Firefox or Chrome based on the article below:

https://blogs.office.com/2014/02/26/smime-encryption-now-in-office-365/

If you have tried IE 9 or above but encounter the same situation, we need to confirm some points below to better understand your situation:

1. What certificate do you have? Please note that third-party certificates aren’t supported for OWA S/MIME but only Windows Certificate Authority issued certificates are supported.

2. S/MIME control in OWA requires .Net 4.5, make sure you have installed this on your computer.

3. Are you an administrator in your Office 365 organization? If yes, can you confirm if any other users encounter the same situation?

Regards,

Larry

Hi,

I don't have access to any other versions of versions of IE (as we only have Windows 10).  So I'll just have to live with it no working by the sounds of it when I don't have access to the desktop app of Outlook.
