The format of the email address isn't correct?

Whenever I attempt to send an email to my wife's email account from my email account I get the following error message:

Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:
(my wife's email alias)

The format of the email address isn't correct. A correct address looks like this: *** Email address is removed for privacy ***. Please check the recipient's email address and try to resend the message.

My wife's email address is indeed valid.  I can send to it from all of my other email addresses including my email address.  Why is this happening?

start typing her address and when it comes up in the autocomplete list, highlight it and press Delete or use the mouse to click the X.
