Outlook 2016 Autocomplete is doing something weird

Windows 10 Pro
Office Home and Business 2016
1TB SSD
24GB RAM
HP ZBook 15 G4

Here is a screenshot of what is going on.  In  Outlook 2016, all of a sudden the autocomplete doesn't open below the address field, it doesn't have a scroll bar, it opens above the address field and has not limit to it's height.  If you have a lot of addresses, it will open and extend up off the screen.  If you move the mouse over one of the addresses, it will highlight it gray, from that point you can arrow up and down -but once off the screen you can't see what's going on.

  • It does the same thing in safe mode
  • Reboot didn't work -I though maybe it was a system, software or .NET issue
  • Quick repair didn't work
  • Online Repair didn't work -this appeared to reinstall the entire office suite
  • I turned autocomplete off and back on -it didn't work
  • I disabled graphics acceleration -that didn't work
  • I checked for any new addons and there were none
  • Nothing new has been installed on the system
  • Office updates are up-to-date
  • No Windows updates have been performed recently

This weird behavior happens in a reply/forward that is docked or popped out and in new messages.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to fix this?

Hi John,

I'm Diane, an Office Apps & Services MVP specializing in Outlook and an Independent Advisor. I will help you with this issue.

This is a bug in the current version. I reported it to Microsoft earlier today.

Which version and build of Outlook are you using? See File, Office Account for the information. (The earlier reports all used Outlook 2019.)

A user in another thread said this worked - if it works for you, let me know. (it did not work for me, but I don't have the autocomplete list going up - but my list looks weird) From https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/fo...

File>Options>Mail>Send Messages

Uncheck "Automatic name checking" and "Use Auto-Complete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines"

Close Outlook and restart the computer.

Open Outlook.

File>Options>Mail>Send Messages

Check "Automatic name checking" and "Use Auto-Complete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines"

File>Options>Mail>Replies and forwards

Check "Open replies and forwards in a new windows"

Diane,

Thanks for the quick follow-up.  I tried what was suggested and it did not work.

The Outlook version is 2104 Build 13929.20296 Microsoft Home and Business 2016

It didn't work for me either.

Do you have this registry key? (It reverts outlook to using the older simple autocomplete list.)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options
DWORD: DisableAutoCompleteUpdate

If so, deleting or renaming it will fix the upward menu.

If you want to rollback, set outlook / office to not install updates automatically then use the rollback script to go back a build or two -

I think the April 23 version is good -

April 29, 2021 Version 2104 (Build 13929.20296)
April 23, 2021 Version 2103 (Build 13901.20462)
April 13, 2021 Version 2103 (Build 13901.20400)

Type cmd on the Start screen to find the Command Prompt then right click on it and choose Run as Administrator

Paste this in the command window and press enter.
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.13901.20462

Thank you for this, I have been looking for the fix for the last several days for this (rolling back the update worked for my dozen or so 2016 and 2019 users!) - only takes a few minutes per install.

Hope they squash this issue for the next update cycle!

Type cmd on the Start screen to find the Command Prompt then right click on it and choose Run as Administrator

Paste this in the command window and press enter.
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.13901.20462
