Outlook 2007 disaster in the making - 'An unexpected error prevented access to this file. Use a disk error checking program to check the disk, ..."

I am running Outlook 2007 from Office 2007 on a 1-year old Dell Vostro running Windows XP Pro 2002 (SP3).

I am running Microsoft Security Essentials all the time.

I leave this computer on 24/7. I leave Outlook up all the time as well.

This morning when I tried to search for an old email in the Outlook search bar, I received a message something to the effect of "autosearch experienced an error" or seomthing like that.   Then a draft email wouldn't save.

I immediately exited Outlook and copied the Outlook.pst file to a new folder on my hard drive (C Drive has 95 GB Used, with 137 GB Free).  The Outlook.pst file is 11GB (Yes, GB!) I know it is too big, I have over 10,000emails in there and need to remove some. Please help me get Outllok open again so I can delete some emails. Thx

I was able to open Outlook a few more times, but could not send or receive emails.  I was able to turn off automatic send/receive.

I searched Microsoft's website and tried running scanpst.exe, and got the message

'An unexpected error prevented access to this file.  Use a disk error checking program to check the disk, and then try using the Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Inbox Repair Tool again."

I tried running Outlook again and it wouldn't open, with the following error message:

"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook.  Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened.  The file c:\Documents and Settings\Mitch\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\outlook\Outlook.pst cannot be accessed."

I ran scanpst.exe again and got the same error message as before:

'An unexpected error prevented access to this file.  Use a disk error checking program to check the disk, and then try using the Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Inbox Repair Tool again."

I ran chkdsk, ran rhe Repair Tool again (scanpst.exe) and got the same identical message again at Phase 1 of 8, 8%, during "Checking File Consisstency..."

Chkdsk ran in a commandprompt window, and did a lot of things during the index phase (I didn't copy them, and the command prompt was gone when it was finished - is there a log?)

So at this point I am not sure if :

A.  I have a hard drive error of some kind

B.  How to repair and/or reduce the Outlook.pst file size

Thanks,

Sounds like you may have a disc error.  I'd run CHDKSK again (and again if needed) until it comes back with no errors. Then go back to running SCANPST. See if this helps: http://www.officeforlawyers.com/outlook/tsol.htm#SCANPST

Any chance you have a backup of your Outlook data file from before this happened?

Answer

You may complete the disc error checking in Windows XP using the link below

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Once the disc check is completed then you may try to run the scan PST file and check if you are able to complete the scan on the PST file and open it

You may also refer to the link below to find and run the scan PST file:
