iOS Outlook (Acompli): Yahoo unexpected log in attempt

Hi,

The new iOS Outlook app is wonderful, and I've been using it everyday since I downloaded it. However, I've also noticed that since I started using this app (I connected my Yahoo account as well as other accounts to the Outlook app), Yahoo has been giving me warning messages about 'Unexpected log-in attempts' from OR, US (Oregeon?!?).

I live in Australia, and I don't personally know anyone from the US; so I'm thinking this has something to do with how Microsoft accesses email accounts through the Outlook app.

Can anyone give me any heads up about this issue?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Cadaei,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community. Thank you for your feedback about the iOS Outlook app product.

It could be that your Internet Service Provider may be Yahoo or might be using Yahoo’s Internet channel to provide Internet connection to you. Yahoo might have back end Servers located in Oregon, US through which the back end process is processed.

As this is a back end activity on the servers associated to Yahoo, it would be prudent to ask Yahoo support for more clarification.

Keep us informed to help you further.

Hi Srimadhwa,

Thanks so much for your response. I contacted Yahoo! about this issue but their solution did not work. I changed my password and even implemented 2-step verification — both of which did not stop the 'Unexpected Log In Attempt' messages.

After digging around the internet, I have found that many other Yahoo! users are also experiencing this problem — all of them saying the log in attempts originate from the US.  Here are just some examples:

Secondly, there are also many articles on the internet claiming that the new iOS Outlook app has numerous security flaws. This article (http://www.techrepublic.com/article/apple-users-should-stick-to-ios-mail/) claims that 'Microsoft receives access to the end users' email credentials' and that 'Microsoft's servers could act as a man-in-the-middle and intercept corresponding email communications.'

This is obviously a very serious issue and will take time to fix. However, for now I may have to revert back to Apple's default mail app if this issue continues to persist.

Hi Cadaei,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Please answer these questions to get more clarity on this issue:

  • As you had contacted Yahoo support for this issue, what was the solution provided them?

  • Were they able to confirm the ip address from when they are getting the login request?

Reply with more information to help you further.

Hi Srimadhwa and Cadaei,

I've experiencing the same problem, and I've tried to look for the solution on the Yahoo support center but wasn't able to find any way to contact them directly. I wish there is any way to 'whitelist' the application.

Thanks,

Teguh

Teguh is right. Yahoo has a terrible customer support system, let alone Yahoo Answers. The only real official channel with Yahoo is through their Twitter. However, they only linked me to their 'spam and hacked accounts' page, which prompted me to change my password and enable 2-step verification.

On the other hand, I was able to retrieve the IP address for the log in attempts originating from Oregon. They were all consistently 54.200.187.34

Same here from Malaysia. On iOS 8.1.3 with latest outlook app, everyday I get notifications on my Yahoo mail that there was an attempt to sign in by an unrecognised device. Only noticed this ever since using the Outlook iOS app.

Hello,

Same issue here.

It's really a problem for me.

I have 8 Yahoo accounts and around 20 'Unexpected Connection' emails everyday.

It's taking a lot of time and energy to delete them each time.

It's getting on my nerves.

I have used several other email aggregators apps in the past and never run into this issue.

It's a Microsoft issue, not a Yahoo issue.

I think it's related to the way Outlook pre-fetch emails in order to serve them more quickly when you fire up the iOS app. But it's just a thought.

What is real is that only Outlook have this issue.

Can you fix it soon?

Thanks
