What is an "action" file and how do I open it?

I am trying to save an income verification # from social security. I want to save it to my desktop, but when I downloaded it, it did not show up. I finally found it with the suffix "action." It will not allow me to change it to a Word or PDF file. Looks like gibberish. I need to bring it up and send it. Any ideas? Thank you! - neeSwee

Open the document, press print at the top right or ctrl+p. Now that you have the print menu open, scroll to the drop down menu labeled "destination." You should see "save as PDF" as an option, along with other printers you may have on your network. Save the doc.

This happened to me with a CRA document -- "Failed-network error" when trying to save the "xxxxxx.action" file. Hope this works for you!

"Open the document, press print at the top right ...."

How do you do this when the file won't open?  That's the problem, .ACTION file extensions won't work in Windows.

At least Windows10 wont open in NotePad, WORD, etc.

I could not get monq's post to work. There is no "press print" top right. How did you do it?!? Something is wrong at Social Security. Supposed to be able to download a PDF but downloads as an ACTION file!

I was frustrated also because I couldn't open the file to begin with!

Click on the silly .action file and select the search for app (on your own PC) and select Acrobat READER DC - it's a free download if you don't already have it. \o/   Go figure, it wouldn't open with my Acrobat PRO XI but Reader was the solution. Of course once it's open you can then "print to PDF".  Apparently our government is siding with ADOBE to have everything DC (Document Cloud).  I like my things on my own PC.

Change the file extension from ".action" to  .pdf , you have to have adobe reader installed.

THIS ^ is the only helpful answer here! Not at all intuitive to hunt for a program when Windows tell you it can't open a file.

But using " Insoptivos=me " informative and helpful suggestion works perfectly.

Thanks!

My husband had the same issue. We were unable to do anything with the file already downloaded, but by going back into Social Security, then clicking the print symbol instead of the download arrow, we could then select to "print to pdf" instead of actually printing. Frustrating problem with a rather simple fix!
