Generic icons for each document are the same.

I have only generic icons for all my Office documents since installing Office 2019. Using a MBP OS 10.13. OS update and Office is up-to-date.

The icons for each document are the same as the generic Word, Excel or Powerpoint icon. They do not show a preview, as they did in previous versions of Office for Mac.

I have properties set to Save picture preview with this document

All other apps provide the appropriate preview icon for the document

I did switch users, created a new PowerPoint document and the problem was resolved - the icon for the document was a preview of the first slide

Thanks in advance

Hi JoeMed,

Thanks for posting your issue in our community. Per your description, the icons for all your Office documents are the same, you’ve tried select the button “Save preview picture with his document”, and you are using the latest version of Office 16.38. Now you’ve switched users to solve it but the issue seems only happens on the PowerPoint presentation. (If I misunderstand, please point out.)

Some issues might be related to the third-party software or some fonts, given that situation, we would like to suggest you use safe mode to launch the Mac.

Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

While it seems that your issue are not related to the fonts or the third party add-ins, you can try to uninstall and reinstall Office to check the outcome. For your reference:

Uninstall Office for Mac

Download and install or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2019 on a PC or Mac

If the issue still persist, please post back when you are free.

Best regards,

Gloria

Gloria, please do not recommend uninstall/reistall unless you know it fixes the problem under discussion. Thank you.

Hi

Please disregard Gloria's advice - at least the part about uninstall/reinstall of Office.

This article explains how to fix icons in Mac OS:

Be sure to include the version number and OS version when asking your question.

Thanks, Gloria. Sometimes just a regular restart can fix the icon issue, but the link i provided should be the cure.

I sincerely appreciate the responses.

I did not reinstall. I did try the Safe Mode - no change

I have not used the recommendations yet.

My 2 year old MBP had battery issue and I need to have is serviced. I'll be back in 2 weeks and post my results

Also I want clarify my existing condition - see image from other user, MS Word example.

I do not have generic images that is an option in "View Options" > "Show Icon Preview"

My issue is the icons are for the MS application - just no longer provide a preview.
