Wrong manual picture cropping in One Note for iPhone iOS

Hello dear community.

The recent version of One Note for iPhone has a bug

When i add picture in "Whiteboard" mode autocrop with page detection works great.

But sometimes i have to change and adjust the size.

In the past everything worked well but for some months there is a bug:

The selection is not selected in the end.

The photo gets smaller.

Here is an example:

Auto detection worked perfectly on this example page but when you edit the selection you can see the selection is not around the corners

When autodetect works there is no problem.

But in custom selection mode there is no excact corner adjustment possible (some months ago there was!).

You have to guess and try several times to get a good photo selection.

I already reinstalled the app two times but nothing changed.

Can you report the same behaviour?

Please tell me! Thanks

Regards

Julius

I have been having this problem for several months. I've reported this bug through the app and there have been numerous updates and none have fixed this problem.

I did the same bug report through the app. (I did not find any additional support email address.)

There even was an update yesterday (March 12) but it did not help.

Could someone please notify Microsoft?

I searched for bug reports. But i found no easy way to report bugs.

I suggest trying (as I just did a few minutes ago) Twitter. Seems to be a better way to get many companies to acknowledge you. I have no idea if MS will but worth a try.

Hey Julius - Sorry you are having troubles.

Have you tried to grab the bit circles in the corner to adjust the image cropping?  After you take the photo use your finger to move the box's edges around.

I do this all of the time in OneNote with the Office Lens technology and everything works great on iOS.  Please just use those circle grippes.  Easy as that.

Let us know!

PS - in your case you have whiteboard selected for a document please change to document which will help with the accuracy too.

It might not seems clear from Julius' post but for someone who has been having this problem for months as well I know what he means when he typed: "The photo gets smaller."

When the image is auto-cropped correctly there isn't a problem, BUT if you do have to adjust it then the edge indicators are WAY off. In his example if you adjust the edges to the correct positions the images gets cropped incorrectly (NOT where you just placed the edges) and is way too small or way off to the side. Put another way: His second image is what OneNote THINKS the edges should be placed at to crop the image so it appears like the first image.

I hope this helped.

Thanks for your answers Daniel and TheMarkitect.

It is exactly as described by TheMarkitect.

And it does not depend on the mode of Office lens.

For better understanding i took some screenshots again.

This time i do not show the auto detection of OneNote but my exact manual cropping

and the resulting image.

At this example of a book cover you can see that some parts of the left, right and bottom of the photo are missing. On other images parts of the top are cut off, too.

I chose documents mode but it is the same cropping behaviour.

Difference between Whiteboard and Documents Mode has only something to do with colour adjustements and contrast i think.

Here are my screenshots:

My exact manual cropping with the corner circles

Image created by OneNote.

Parts of the left, the right and the bottom are missing.

You can see the "OMNIBUS" text at the bottom is missing completely.

I really hope the some Microsoft developers will fix this soon.

This bug exists for several month now.

@Daniel Escapa

Could you please tell some Microsoft developers.

Thanks.

We haven't heard back, do you understand the bug we are dealing with now? I'm sure Julius would agree that we would love to know if any of the Development team has taken a look at this thread or are looking into the issue. We've had another update to the app since the last reply and I still have the same bug.

Hello again, thanks for the details and yes we have started to see some other customers report these issues as well.

In the meantime I would recommend using Office Lens which you can download as an independent app and it syncs to OneNote.  More details here: http://blogs.office.com/2015/04/02/office-lens-comes-to-iphone-and-android/

Thank you! I've been using Office Lens and it works great, syncs with OneNote no problem. The scanned document does seem to load in checker-board like sections, unlike those that I used to scan "in app" before but no real problem there. Also, like Julius stated in the original post, it would be nice to have the pop out window showing a magnified view of where you are adjusting the corners to because my finger is in the way otherwise (I remember those existing once).
Overall very happy with the new Office Lens.
