Migration from hosted Exchange to Exchange Online Plan 2

Is my only option to migrate email from a hosted Exchange provider (Apptix) to Exchange Online to use a third party product like MigrationWiz?  Apptix is not providing any assistance to its customers who are NOT migrating to GoDaddy.

Thanks

Hi Lisa,

You can consider using IMAP migration. However, IMAP migration only moves emails and folders. Some manual steps such as using PST files are needed to move the contacts and calendar events to Office 365. For the details, please refer to Migrate Email from an IMAP Server to Exchange Online Mailboxes.

In addition, we do have some other migration options in Office 365 to migrate mailboxes from another Exchange mail server. But to use these options, the admin access to the Exchange mail server are always required, while it’s normally impossible for users who are working with a hosted Exchange mail system.

So, based on my experience, the only official solution which applies to your scenario is using the IMAP migration.

If you have more questions, just feel free to post back.

For other options, any sharing from community members will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Henry Huang

So you're saying that I would need to export each users mailbox down to a PST file and then import it into their new mailbox in Exchange Online?  If I'm understanding you correctly, this would take days as we have 263 GB of data, with the largest mailbox having 10 GB of data.  So if this is the only route, besides paying some $1,500 for the very basic license of MigrantionWiz, we should just eliminate Exchange Online as an option for replacing Apptix.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your updates.

I’m afraid you misunderstood what Henry means. What he actually indicates is that:

1.We officially suggest using IMAP migration to migrate emails from an IMAP server to Exchange online mailboxes.

2. As this just moves emails instead of contacts and calendar, if you also need to move them to Office 365, manual operations like using PST files is required.

Meanwhile, please feel free to come back to us if you encounter further problems during IMAP migration.

Best Regards,

Sam

So I would need to import 134 PST file in order to get contacts, calendars, notes, etc. into each users mailbox?  Henry also stated that in order to use IMAP migration I would need permissions to the Apptix exchange servers that " it’s normally impossible for users who are working with a hosted Exchange mail system".  Therefore IMAP is not possible?

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your updates.

Yes, you are right. Exporting/importing so many contacts and calendars should be heavy workload. But the IMAP migration is the only official supported solution in this scenario. If you think that’s inconvenient, IMAP migration might not be an option.

On the other hand, I have re-considered the situation and found out that you may also consider an Exchange hybrid deployment if your Exchange server is 2010 or 2013 version. In an Exchange hybrid deployment, mailboxes including emails and contacts and calendar items can be completely moved to Exchange Online. Since your Exchange server is hosted by another service provider, you may need to involve the server administrator if you'd like to set up the hybrid deployment.

Please feel free to let us know if you would like to know more about the hybrid environment.

Thanks,

Sam
