This is a unique situation where I converted an account to a shared mailbox during an off-boarding process. The personnel who access this shared mailbox now no longer wants any new mail delivered, but still have access to the mailbox.
Here are the steps I took:
- Convert to shared mailbox
- Disabled user in AD
- Can't make any Exchange changes on the shared mailbox because of sync (ie prevent from showing in global address list, change alias, etc)
- Deleted user from AD
- Restored user in Office 365 Admin as a cloud account
- The Shared mailbox still thinks it's linked to an AD account, and won't let me make changes.
Any other ideas? Is there another way to prevent email delivery to this shared mailbox while maintaining the content? I did remove the SMTP entry in the Attribute Editor tab in AD, which synced to the 365 account, but not the shared mailbox.
