A desktop, a laptop and an Office 2016 license

So far so good:

  1. I purchased a full Office Professional 2016 license at reseller (Newegg) for over $350, installed it on my desktop machine, and activated it online with my converged MS ID (same as Skype ID).  It's working fine.
  2. I registered both my desktop and my laptop Windows 10 machines with my MS ID, so the two now show up as "Devices" in my online Microsoft account.  The same MS ID now secures both machines.

PROBLEM 1:  My Office license does not appear in the Apps for my Microsoft account.  Where has it disappeared to?

PROBLEM 2: I need to be able to use Office Professional 2016 both at home (desktop) and on the road (laptop).  This is different from transferring the license, since I need my license to work on both machines, one when Im at home, the other when I am on the road.  When I install Office on the laptop, I get a message that only one device is allowed.  Do I really have to spend another $350+ to run Office on my travel laptop when I'm not at home?  That's crazy.

My solution is:

Am I better off running Open Office?

Should I not buy MS Surface to replace my Android tablet, if Office will cost me yet another $350 to run there?

Keen to see how to handle this!

Hi,

Below are the answers on your questions:

  • To find your Office applications in Windows 10, follow the steps provided on this link.
  • To have an Office applications on both devices, we suggest that you install Office 365 where you can have Office applications up to 5 devices.

Ok thank you.

Cloud 365 does not make sense for me, I am offline in airplanes when on laptop.

So, OpenOffice, and no Surface in my future.

IMHO, Microsoft should consider allowing the same lifetime Office licence to run on machines that are secured by the same identity. That's more aligned with the business traveller.
