Office 365 on laptop - Outlook, Excel, Word are running on Edge

Using Office 365 Home for quite a while now.

On my desktop Office applications are launched as desktop applications, meaning they have toolbars, menus, File>Options, etc.

For the first time .. I have been trying to install Office on my laptop.

Tried this 4 times now - in between restoring a clean Windows image. Each time the install is successful.

However, the Office applications are launched/opened in Edge (Chromium)

So, Outlook is launched as Outlook Web Access (OWA), instead of the 'normal' desktop mode, with the toolbars, buttons and so on.

Also tried the offline installer - Office O365HomePremRetail.img > setup32.exe

Q: is not not possible to get the same on my laptop as on my desktop ?

Or should I use 2016 installer (single license)?

Thanks.

On the other device you have to install Office from your MS Account https://office.com/myaccount

Hi Mike_884

if you have an Office 365 subscription, you can install the ful suite of Office applications on all your devices, there is no limit and you should not be stuck using the online versions in a web browser . . .

Use this tool from Microsoft to remove all remnants of any previous Office Installation:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Uninst...

Restart (not shut down) your PC

Check your Start Menu for any Office App tiles, if you find any, rigth click and choose Uninstall

Go to http://www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.

On that page. locate your Office 365 subscription and click Install

That should install the full Office suite on your laptop . . .

That's how I tried.

Followed both:

Download and install or reinstall Office 365 or Office 2019 on a PC or Mac
and
Use the Office offline installer

Hi DaveM121, many thanks for the elaborate reply. Please do note that the laptop has a clean Windows 10 x64 and only that, i.e. nothing else is installed (except then that I update Edge to the Chromium version).

Made an image of Windows.

In between each attempt I restore the clean Windows image.

when launching e.g. Outlook, I'll get the OWA version.

later:

I gave it a try and installed Office 365 on vmware workstation.

Here things go fine...!

Here I get the appropriate window to finish the install and Outlook (see below)

I do not get this window on my laptop, even though I followed the very same steps...

Really weird...

Here is the "solution"...

Up front, I again tried to install on the laptop, same results as above.

Important... would like to emphasize: as said, it was/is on a clean Windows 10 x64 laptop.

I wondered why on VMware Workstation the install went fine and apposed to my laptop.

The VM version was also clean, it even had no Edge Chromium, but the 'old' version of Edge.

Wait ... Edge Chromium... that is difference.

So I performed a complete reset on my laptop (removing settings, etc)

Did the install and now things went fine, with the old Edge version.

Now, the only difference between the Windows version before and the full reset is Edge Chromium.

A Google search on : Edge Chromium Office 365

shows there are something with Edge Chromium and 365.

Conclusion:
I installed Office about half a dozen times on a clean laptop with Chromium and ended up in the online version.

In case of the old Edge version, Office 365 is installed the normal way.
