Error 1402: Setup cannot open the registry key UNKNOWN\Components

Original Title: "Error 1402. Windows 8"

I've been having trouble with my office 2010 since I upgraded to Windows 8, so I was trying to uninstall it so I could install it again. But when I tried to unistall office 2010 it gives me this error: "Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key UNKNOWN\Components....." how can I fix it?

I did some research and there are a lot of solutions but none in windows 8. In Windows 7 was with this command "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db deflt base.sdb /verbose" but even applying it, got me the same error.

Thank you.

You may try the steps mentioned below:

Note: Back up the registry key before you modify or delete any key in the registry check the link to back the windows registry.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

1. Locate to the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components. The 'S-1-5-18' key may be different on your computer.

2. Once you find the registry key displayed in the error message under components, you need to provide permission for the key.

To do so right click on it and click on permissions and then click on advanced tab and click on owner tab and select the owner and click apply and then click on permissions tab on the same window and click on add tab and type EVERYONE and click ok and make sure that you click on full control check box and click ok, once you get back to the previous window you will find two check boxes check both the boxes click on apply and close the window.

3. Once done try to uninstall Office 2010 and check if that helps.
