# Office Error Code 30100-## and up - Part 4 of 3

Pet Project:

https://aka.ms/Su0afc    This is a link to the MS Feedback Hub.

.

I learned that the 8 character error codes are actually built up from 2 x 4 character "words", ie:

.

.  *  "0x8007" means: "Windows Update".
.  *  "0x05B4" means: "This operation returned because the timeout period expired."
.

.

If we had access to it we could break down the error codes to at least get a high level idea of the problem. That way, when we can't find any other documentation for the error code (as is the situation for most error codes) we can apply general fixes to the identified problem

.

PLEASE go to the feedback and VOTE for it: https://aka.ms/Su0afc

Technical Level : Intermediate
.
Summary
.

Part of the design of the “new and improved” <heavy sarcasm> Office 365/2013 is that to be more “user friendly”.  I do understand the effort since most users are not technically inclined (no surprise) so they don’t want to deal with technical issues (I just am not totally in support of the way MS did it).  MS took a few approaches to this “user friendliness”:

1 - the “Click-to-Run” (CTR) “virtual computer” installation

2 - new Code 0-# and Code 300##-## / "Something Went Wrong ..." error messages

3 - almost completely eliminating access to the local install version Office 2013

Unfortunately, MS did not bother to make available documentation for many of these new error codes.  So, for now at least, all we can do is collect answers from the forum identifying things that have worked for others. Some of the fixes are just “voodoo”, they are not really a fix, but coincidentally trigger the real fix in the background.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms681381%28v=vs.85%29.aspxThis MS page has links to very simple text translations of these WINDOWS error codes, but no specific help. Basically useless, but it MAY help you understand the error.

<snip>

Note

The information on this page is intended to be used by programmers so that the software they write can better deal with errors. If you are an end-user that is experiencing difficulty with an application you are installing or running, contact customer support for the software that is displaying the error message. To obtain support for a Microsoft product, go to http://support.microsoft.com.

The System Error Codes are very broad. Each one can occur in one of many hundreds of locations in the system. Consequently the descriptions of these codes cannot be very specific. Use of these codes requires some amount of investigation and analysis. You need to note both the programmatic and the run-time context in which these errors occur. Because these codes are defined in WinError.h for anyone to use, sometimes the codes are returned by non-system software. Sometimes the code is returned by a function deep in the stack and far removed from your code that is handling the error.

When you get an error, we Need the FULL and EXACT Error message text and error code (if there is one) as Diagnostic Clues

.

First rule of asking questions, you have to provide enough information about what you are doing so we can try to recreate the problem. If there is an error code generated, we need to see that too.
.
Describe the exact steps you take to create the error (so we can try to recreate it) and the resulting error. In theory that is obvious, but apparently you didn’t give us enough information to provide a good answer ... <sigh>
.
We search various sources for the error message you give us to find possible solutions. So we need texact error message text, we can’t find paraphrased error messages.

.

Trick to capture text of error messages

.
This link describes a shortcut to capture the FULL and EXACT error message text in a message box. As of Win 2000, <CTL><C> captures error text from most(some?) dialog boxes. Report it back here by pasting the text into a reply, or typing the full message if you can’t copy it.

Posting Images / screen captures to Answers: see this wiki
.

Max image width 625px
.

The Wiki is written for Wiki Authors, but applies to all replies on the forum
.

.

The site owners have listened and made the process of posting images easier (but not easiest, yet).  The link above details the process.
.

The replies are HTML files, you cannot paste images directly into them like a Word DOC(X) file. Instead you have to provide, in one form or another, a HTML link to a picture file that is available on the internet.
.

In short form, the image must be in PNG, JPG, GIF, and BMP format.  Use the “Add Image” button that is on the same line as the “Bold”, “Italic”, “Underline” feature buttons.
.
So, you will first have to save screen captures to a file on your HD or the internet, ie skydrive, before you can insert them in the discussion using the “Add Image” button.
.
NOTE: I would like to get screen captures of all of the error messages but I don't have 365 so I fortunately don't get to experience the joy of these errors.
.
NOTE: One "fix" you can apply to all of these problems.
If you are using a browser other than MS Internet Explorer, try repeating the process (ie Windows update or Office Install) using IE.  A couple of people have noticed that this alone is enough to fix some problems.
.
MS General Troubleshooting Page for Office 2013/365
.

.
This page starts with recommendation to uninstall using their "Fix It" tool and re-install you copy of Office.  If that doesn't work, it includes instructions for several specific conditions:
.

Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall

Try updating your router firmware

Use Disk Cleanup to delete temporary files and temporary internet files

Reset Internet Explorer settings

Stop the print spooler

Remove older versions of Office (Personally I <Rohn007> don't agree with this one ... )

Run system file checker: sfc /scannow

Turn off hardware acceleration

Try a hardwired connection

Create a new Windows Admin profile (Windows 7 only)

.

If the above techniques don't work, you could try booting into Windows Safe Mode (where all "startup" programs and 3rd party Windows Services are NOT started) and doing the install.

I have worked with Microsoft support on this error before. In my case, the problem is that my university's network architecture uses a hidden proxy server to scrub/filter the connection. Both times Microsoft was unable to fix the problem directly. They had a work around where, in last-ditch cases, they just manually install Office without Click-to-Run.

Anyway, yes, this is a network architecture problem. Trying to install from a different location might help.

I think my problem may have been similar to yours, Chris... I was installing Office at work, which I'm on a domain for... Its quite possible that the ip was being rerouted via several external ports from the network, or something like that, because as soon as I got home, re-ran the fixit, and tried reinstalling (Access, at least), it appears to be working. Fingers crossed that this will work on Office 2013 as well, or else I'm still in trouble...

Same problem, error code 30174-4.

Had Office 365 running fine for a week or so. Today did a reset of Windows 8 and now Office refuses to install when I download the install file from the main webpage. I have absolutely nothing else installed on the laptop as it has just been reset, so no idea what could be causing this problem.

I was having the same problem, error code 30174-4 on running Click to Run installation.

• Upon further investigation, I found that I had two simultaneous network connections that routed to the internet. One was a WiFi connection linked to a particular subnet, and the other was a wired ethernet connection linked to a different subnet. Both connections were capable of reaching the internet, although both would have had different public facing IP addresses.

• My best guess is that the streaming requires a consistent connection to one IP address, but the client is load balancing or shifting the connection between the two routes.

• When I disconnected the wired connection, and kept only the WiFi connection - the problem was resolved.

For those people experiencing the same issue - check to see if you have a wireless and wired connection, or an active VPN or similar.

.

Every time Microsoft forces me to upgrade windows (resulting in a earning curve,
and third party software obsolescence - gosh I hate Microsoft) I do my best to
make the latest carp look like Windows 2000 / XP, with a start button, no annoying
tiles or semi-hidden program files. Start Menu X makes Windows 7 look like Windows XP.
It may be sniffing windows in way that the installer did not like.
.

Gosh I love google desktop and install it whenever I can even though it is discontinued.
Windows is meant to include some sort of fast-search indexing system but it never came

close to the speed and ease of use of Google desktop. Google desktop likewise sniffs what is going on in the system so as to build the search index. Maybe the installer
did not like that.

• .
3) Clipex
A clipboard enhancement that remembers the past few clipboard contents. That likewise
sniffs but I can't imaging it was the cause of my problems.

• .

That is all I did differently.

• My solution was drastic but effective - I ended up installing a new 3.5inch internal drive, formatting it then installing Windows 7 Ultimate. At this point the Office 2013 download installed perfectly! It does seem to be the case that you MUST get rid of ANY traces of old Office software BEFORE attempting to install Office 2013.

Can someone please please tell me how to resolve this, I have tried so many different solutions and none of the have worked except completely formatting me computer to factory settings then it works for a little while then dies again!

• 2 people replied that they had to free up hard drive space on small devices. One person reported the problem when they had 1.5 GB free. The other reported the problem was fixed after they had freed up approx 5GB.

• That makes sense for a couple of reasons.

• One is that the last time I checked, the installation file is 1.5 to 2 GB, depending on the specific Office bundle you are downloading.

• Windows Update is changing from downloading many relatively small specific update files, to fewer, larger system updates.  So the Update process tends to use more temp HD space than in the past.

• Another is that "traditionally" Windows got "flaky" when it thought it did not have "enough" free space on the HD.  In the past (when HD's were MUCH smaller than today) there seemed to be a hard coded limit in Windows requiring 10% freespace, I don't know if that still applies (I think it has been removed).  Not so long ago that lead to error messages even when there were multiple GB of free space.  Depending on what browser you are using, sometimes it can have built in limits on space used. For example, IE 11 still has an option to limit space used in Tools menu > Internet Options command > Browser History Settings... button > Temporary Internet Files tab > Disk space to use. There is a radio button to adjust the value.  So IF you were saving to this location, you could run into this limit.  But if you save to some other location, ie "Downloads" folder, this setting should not be an issue.

• If you have it, you can use a tool like (free) "CCleaner" to easily free up space. I have been using it for years with no problem, others have reported issues.

• Otherwise you can always use tool that ships with Windows, "Disk Cleanup". Here are a couple of articles on how to use it:

There could be a small problem with your Window installation. The Check disk command cleans up small sections of the disk that may have been “orphaned” / corrupted when Windows is not shut down normally. The SFC command will check and repair Windows system files, then the DISM commands will repair any other minor problems with Windows.

.

Right Click on the result and select “Run as Administrator”

This problem can occur when all the following conditions are true:

Office was installed before the May Public Update (KB 2964042, May 13, 2014) was installed.

An Office product was activated before the May Public Update was installed.

There was an attempt to add another Office product (such as Microsoft Visio, OneDrive for Business, or Office 365) or to reinstall an Office product on the same computer after the May Public Update was installed.

***** Solution ****

None of the buttons were very helpful.  I had the option of submitting a ticket since I also have a Business O365 subscription (using that to install resulted in the same goat rope). Support was great and we finally solved it. It seemed the resolution was to do a 'special' full uninstall of Office and then a couple of others. By full uninstall I mean it is like Office had never been on the machine before, so it is like getting a new PC and starting from scratch with Office. You will need to re-add all your accounts, and if you use a pst to archive files locally, know where it is.  In any case Support also sent me the steps we used for future reference. I will post below. These worked for me, The Office uninstall is extreme, and I had Office 2016 on there, though that wasn't what was there initially, so your  mileage may vary. The title of the uninstall link does note 2013, 2016 or O365. If you have been fighting this activation issue, good luck.

• Steps to resolve:

• 1. Uninstall Office 2016

I

• f this fails, try the manual uninstall instructions here:

• 2. Install One note 2013 from

This is very critical, as this installation will fix the incorrect configuration.

• 3. Reinstall Office 2016. During the setup, the previous version (OneNote 2013 ClickToRun) will get removed.

This person solved it in two minutes!  That was after I agreed to pay $100 to MS since they couldn't solve it at Level 1 support. • It has to do with your computer not being able to communicate with their server to activate the program. I'm not sure exactly how he did it, but it was done in 2 minutes. He admitted that Level 1 didn't have the 'authority' to do the fix. I then asked why I had to pay$100 to get it solved, even though MS knew of the problem. He agreed to refund my \$100.

Error code

Error type

Description

.

• may be due to a too-small System Reserved Partition size (you'll need to use a third party program, such as EaseUS Partition Manager to fix it),

• or might be a conflict with a VPN Client module.

• " MREGISTER_E_DEVICE_MESSAGE_FORMAT_ERROR 0x80190001 Invalid Schema, Message Format Error from server."
• This link above documents the problem fairly well

• Here are some more suggestions:

• Disconnect all peripherals, including gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, and other non-essential devices.

Perform a clean reboot, restart, then try again.

If you are upgrading using the .ISO file or Bootable USB, disconnect from the internet during setup.

If you are updating through Windows Update, disconnect from the internet when the download reaches 100%.

• Code C004C003

This product key didn’t work.

The above activation error commonly occurs if you are using an invalid product key. You will have to buy a new product key. If you purchased a PC with Windows pre-installed, you would have to contact the PC manufacturer for the original key.

• .

Code C004C008

The activation server reported that the product key has exceeded its unlock limit.

The error occurs if the product key which you are trying to use has already been used on different PC, or it is being used on more than one PC than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow. Fix this activation problem by buying a product key for each one of your PCs in order to activate Windows on them.

You can buy a product key from the Windows Store by following these steps:

Click on Start and then select  Settings > Update & security > Activation.

Choose Go to Store, and follow the shown instructions to buy Windows.

.

• Code C004C020

The activation server reported that the Multiple Activation Key has exceeded its limit.

This activation error occurs when a Volume License (a license which is bought from Microsoft by a business to install Windows on multiple PCs) has been used on more PCs than specified in Microsoft Software License Terms. To fix this problem, you might want to use a different product key to activate Windows on your PC. Your organization’s support person could help.

Code C004C4AE

Genuine Validation detected tampered Windows binaries.

• .

• If you are using a third-party application to add a display language which is not currently supported by Windows you might get the above error. To fix, restore your PC to an earlier point in time to undo the changes that were made to Windows.

• .

.
• Code C004E003

The Software Licensing Service reported that the license evaluation failed.

You might see the above activation error after installing some third-party software that could have changed the system files. Windows activation requires certain system files to finish the activation process. Try to restore your PC’s system files back to an earlier point in time which removes any software that you installed after the specified point in time without affecting personal files of yours.

• .

• Code C004F016

Let's stop and restart the Software Protection service following steps mentioned below and verify the result.

a) Hold Windows key +R.
Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter
services.msc

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

b) In the Services list, double-click Software Protection.
c) In the Software Protection Properties dialog box, click Automatic in the Startup type list.
d) Click Start in the Service Status, click Apply, and then click OK.
e) Do the same for
Office Source Engine
service as well.
f) Now restart the computer and try installing Office.

If the issue still persist, let’s manually uninstall Office suite following instructions mentioned in the following article below.

IMPORTANT:  Ensure to back up complete registry following steps mentioned in the article below as manual uninstallation involves in deleting the registry entries.Restart the computer, then re-install Office 2016 and verify the result.

.

• Code C004F034

• Windows will not activate error code: 0xC004F034

• .

• There are several causes and fixes

• One of the suggested causes is that the MS activation servers are swamped. There are 2 possible fixes for that situation, wait hours or days to let the volume of traffic to MS decrease, or be very patient and just keep clicking on the Activate button.  One tester reported it took over 20 attempts before his activation "slipped" through and made a connection. Then it his specific situation about 10 minutes to activate and apply outstanding updates.

• Code 0xC004F034 is a Windows 10 activation bug that usually happens when you upgrade the system from older Windows versions (Windows 7, 8, 8.1) to Windows 10.  Then you trigger the activation manually by going to: Settings -> Update & Security -> Activation -> Activate.

As well as overloaded MS activation systems the error can be caused by entering a bad Product key.

• .

As well as overloaded activation servers at MS, there are some other possible causes:

• check your system Date and Time settings. If they are too far from reality activation will fail

Resetting the update system has been reported to work. Go to this page
and Find then perform this process: "Manually Reset Windows Update System"

Missing or damaged Windows system files can be repaired by using DISM or by doing a clean install

3rd party tools sometime have unexpected effects, uninstall anti-malware and other "cleanup" utilities

• Code C004F061

The Software Licensing Service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations.

The above activation error occurs if a previous version of Windows was not installed on your PC before entering a product key to upgrade to Windows 10. To continue the upgrade process, you should have Windows 8 or Windows 7 already on your PC.

.

• Code C004FC03

A networking problem has occurred while activating your copy of Windows.

This activation error occurs when your PC is not connected to the Internet, or the firewall settings on your PC is preventing Windows from finishing the activation process online. In this case, make sure you are connected to the Internet and the firewall is not trying to block Windows from getting activated. If you still encounter this problem, you could try activating Windows via phone.

• C1900101 - 0x30018

• The installation failed in the first_Boot phase with an error during SYSPREP Operation

• .

• Code C1900209

Possible causes:
• #1 Corrupt Update Date base
• #2 Incompatible software is blocking the upgrade process.

.

Possible Fixes:

#1  Find the section "General Update Trouble Shooting Process" and work through the steps described there, try update again

#2  Identify the incompatible application.

This requires you to create a bootable copy of the Windows install file then run the Setup.exe command with specific command line parameters as described on this page: https://borncity.com/win/2016/12/16/windows-10-a-feature-upgrade-drops-error-0xc1900209/After you ID the problem application either upgrade it or uninstall it.

#3 Do a Clean install of the current version of Windows as a simple way to bypass trouble shooting.

Once you have completed running the FIXIT follow these steps to delete the Office 15 folders.

From Windows Explorer please navigate to the following location: C:\Propgram Files\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\

Make sure to delete the Microsoft Office 15 folder. In case you are able to delete the folder then right-click on it and click on Rename. Rename the folder as Microsoft Office 15 old. Ignore these steps in case you are not able to find the Microsoft Office 15 folder in the above mentioned location or if you are not able to delete or rename the MicrosoftOffice 15 folder.

Once you have completed running the FIXIT and deleted/renamed the Office 15 folder be sure to restart your computer.

Now try logging into the My Account page and install Office 365.

Check if you were able to download and install Office 365 successfully. Once this is completed check if Office 365 prompts you for activation. If yes, proceed with the steps on screen and activate Office 365.
