Excel 2016 keeps freezing on exit (Windows 10 build 10547 x64)

OK though im good with solving problems, this has been a huge headache

I recently updated to Office 2016 plus (x64) and i am a windows 10 insider running the latest fast ring build (10547, x64)

When office RTMed, excel started acting in a bizarre way. every time i try to exit an excel spreadsheet either through the X button, or through File -> exit, excel hangs. there is nothing i can do, only minimize it. I tried killing the task on task manager, it says access denied. so i have to either restart or sign out for it to shut down.

I tried repairing office, no luck. I uninstalled all printer drivers and set the default to XPS or PDF, no luck.

I disabled Hardware acceleration, no luck. I tried opening the same files in Excel safe mode, no luck.

i tried disabling the internet, no luck.

The funny part is that some times exiting a spreadsheet actually works! my issue does not happen in one file specifically. it can happen on any xlsx or xlsm file, at any time.

when i exit excel the first time and it freezes, it asks if i want to end task it which i do. but it still stays there.

i downloaded OffCAT, no particular issues except cached credentials and local profile. these are the events generated when i try to end task excel (and get the message excel has stopped working etc.)

Answer

Hi Minas,

Thanks for using both Windows 10 and Office 2016 as part of the Insider program.

The problem you are referring to (crashes and hangs when exiting Office applications) was a problem that was introduced around build 10536 of Windows. It can occur in all Office applications, but appears to be most commonly reported in Excel.

The good news is that this issue was identified and should be fixed as of build 10550 of Windows 10. As a workaround (thanks for those that proposed it on this thread!), you can change the Display Layout in the "View" menu of the File Explorer in Windows to an option that doesn't have thumbnails, such as "List".

If you are still seeing this issue after build 10550, please let us know by replying to this post again.

Thank you,

Micah

Edit: I added the workaround proposed by others on this thread.
