Hi Msp2uga,

Thank you for your message in this forum. We understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it. And we will try our best to help you.

According to your description, it seems that you encountered an error message when you used your Excel file.

If my understanding is right, generally, the error 0xc0000142 can happen if some Office program components have gotten corrupted. So we’d give you some suggestions below and hope that will help you:

  1. We’d suggest you go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > select Project > right-click and select Change > Online repair.
  2. You can also open your Excel in safe mode to check if the same problem will occur. It will help in identifying an add-in or extension that may be causing a problem on startup. As steps shown below: Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner) in Windows, and click Run.> In the Run box, type one of the command: excel /safe

If the suggestions above don’t work, to better understand your situation, could you provide the information below?

  1. Could you provide the Product Information and version of your Office? Since you cannot open Excel, you can go to Word > File > Account and provide the full screenshot of it.
  2. Do all Excel files have the same problem? You can try opening Excel directly to check if the same problem will occur.
  3. Could you provide the screenshot of error message?
  4. Do the other Office applications have the same problem?

Best Regards,

Sukie

I had this happen to me yesterday as well, and so did a coworker. I tried running the quick repair on Office and it had the same results as trying to open a file. Then I tried the Online Repair and it essentially just uninstalled all the applications and then nothing else. After I gave up on it re-installing them, I manually did it myself and now they seem to be OK again.

I'm wondering if this is some sort of glitch in a background update for Office 365 that happened yesterday.

I am facing similar issue, still not able to get my excel up andrunning. It shows windows is searching for EXCEL.EXE.  In my program files>> Microsoft office>> Root>> EXCEL.EXE application has gone missing.

I have already tried re-installing, and online repair. None of them worked for me.

Hi shakshijajoo1,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

According to your description, it seems that you cannot open your Excel and encountered an error message. And you have tried reinstalling Office, however, the same problem still persists.

Given this situation, we understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

On the one hand, we'd want to give some suggestions below and hope that will help you:

  1. You can also refer to this article: How to perform a clean boot in Windows to reboot your computer in clean boot to check if the same problem will occur. You can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

  2. If all suggestions above all don’t work, you can also create a new local windows profile with the clean environment to check if the same problem will occur, please refer to Create a local user or administrator account in Windows 10.

On the other hand, we'd also suggest you post a new thread in our forum and our engineers will focus on your specific scenario and provide specific suggestions.

Thank you for your understanding!

Best Regards,

Sukie

I have had this Office application stop code pop up twice, both times after a Windows update. I just log in to my Microsoft account and install the software from my account page. Easy, relatively quick and it works.
