Horizontal error bars added by default - how to disable?

When adding vertical error bars to scatter plots, Excel automatically adds horizontal error bars.  Is there a way to change this default?  I never use x error bars, but often use y error bars.  On my old computer (Windows XP + Office 2007) I simply deleted them manually a few times and then, somehow, it remembered and they never popped up again, with no other manual intervention.  This isn't happening for my new computer, so I'd love to know how to disable it.

Thanks!

Maybe not "exactly what you want", but it's better than the default.

Another option is to use the Error Bar add-in I wrote for Excel 2007. It makes life much easier (there's also a version for Excel 2003 and earlier which makes life a little easier).
