I'm having this issue as well.  it happens when i am working in an existing file or a new file (both xlsx and xlsm)

In order to troubleshoot the issue related to Excel, try the step below:

Browse to the location mentioned below and delete the startup files for Excel and check if it helps fix the issue:

· C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLStart

· C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

On Windows XP:

· C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Note: Take a backup of files before deleting the files.
