Assuming you've turned on AutoRecovery in XL Preferences, you should, under normal circumstances, only see an Autorecovery file if you've had an already SAVED workbook open for longer than the Autorecover period and have made changes to it. Autorecover
files store the changes from the last save.
When XL closes normally, part of the shutdown process deletes these files.
On startup, XL checks the folder - if there's an Autorecover file in the folder, it assumes that XL crashed, and offers to open the saved file (if it still exists) and apply the changes.
So not seeing any files in the folder is generally a GOOD thing.
