Unable to open <URL>

Using Mac Excel 2011, I'm suddenly getting the error message: " Unable to open <URL>. Cannot locate the internet server or proxy server."

A direct input of the URL works on Safari, but neither on Excel or Word when I try going through link command.

 I'd appreciate any help resolving this issue.

Answer
By changing "http" to "https" resolved the problem for me. I have no idea why the link "changed", but doing the modification of all of my links got the hyperlink working again.
