XSLX files and MS Excel

I recently did a clean instal of Windows 10 and then reinstalled my old Office 2003 only to find that documents originally composed in Excel were now displayed as .xslx files and were not openable. .xslx files are also displayed as Sync Pending by Microsoft One Drive. Will they revert to Excel after the Sync or not? Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can go back to reading the xslx files in their original Excel format? Thank you.

XSLX files are Excel files only a later version, Office 2007 and above.  Is it possible you used Office 365 to create those workbooks?

Note, Office 2003 will not be able to read them.

Maybe you could download install the Microsoft Compatibility Pack so's Excel 2003 can open files from later versions.
