Word Online will only open .dotx files in read only mode

I am an Office 365 user. I do not have Office installed locally on my Mac. I want to use a .dotx template to create new documents using the

Microsoft Word Online edition.

I have a .dotx template, which I downloaded from Microsoft, here https://templates.office.com/en-us/Polished-resume-designed-by-MOO-TM16392751

I have uploaded this template to my OneDrive, but when I attempt to open it in Word Online, I get an error stating that it is in read only mode, with a button that supposedly will allow me to edit the document when clicked. Please see below.

Clicking this button does nothing, and there appears to be no way to force Microsoft Word Online to allow me to edit this document online. I do not have Office installed locally, so editing with the desktop edition of Office is not an option.

Does Microsoft Word Online even support .dotx templates like this one? If so how can I make it work correctly?

Answer

Hi Adam,

To create a document with a custom template in Word Online, we need to create a content type and associate that local document template (.dotx) you downloaded to this content type in SharePoint Online or OneDrive for Business. You can refer to Create a content type and Associate a document template with a site content type in this article Create or customize a site content type for details.

Then, we need to add this content type to a library (click LIBRARY tab > Library Settings > Advanced Settings > turn on Allow management of content types? , back to the Library Settings page, click Add from existing site content types > add the custom content type (Note: we need to select the right content type group in the drop-down list to find the content type )

After doing the above, we can go to the library and click FILES tab > New Document > select the custom content type name to create a document using that custom document template.

Zixuan
