Word (Office 365) document does not print

I can't print from Word document. I have tried:

  • Print test page from Setting - Printers & scanners - it printed

  • Print from Excel file - it printed

  • Print from text file - it printed

  • Print from WordPad - it printed

  • Print from Word document with different printers (Brother HL-L2315D, Microsoft to PDF, PDF24): no response.

I have printed many times with the same file (4*6 card) but it failed for printing recently. The files with regular letter size failed as well.

There is a bug with the current version and build of Office 365 that, under certain circumstances causes printing to fail. The Microsoft Product Team are aware of the issue and are working on a fix for it. In the meantime, save the document as a pdf file and print that.

Hope this helps,

Hi Jocelyn2021L,

Sorry for the inconvenience the problem caused for you.

Based on your description, you can't print on Word application. To help you better, could you please provide some information for me?

  1. Which OS are you using, Windows or MacOS?

  2. Please provide us with a screenshot on your current Office version.

  3. Does the problem happen on all the Word documents? If you create a new one, will the same problem happen?

  4. You mentioned "no response", did you mean that after clicking Print, no window and no error messages will pop up ?

Appreciate your cooperation in advance.

Best regards,

Jazlyn

Hi Jazlyn,

Please see below:

1. OS: Windows 10

2. Office Version: Microsoft 365

3. The problem happens on all the Word documents including a new document.

4. After clicking "Print", it goes back to the document body without error message and not triggering the printer either.

Thank you.

Jocelyn

Hi Jocelyn,

Thank you for the reply.

I tested printing in Word with the same version as yours on my side, however, there was no problem.

Since you mentioned that it will back to document body when you click Print, please try to fix Office client, by performing a repair. Try a quick repair first, and if that doesn't work, try the online repair.

You can also try Office safe mode to determine if the third party add-ins affect the office program.

Best regards,

Jazlyn

Hi Alex and Jazlyn,

I have tried both repairs (offline and online) and they didn't fix the problem. I wonder if Doug has information from the product team about the estimated time of the fix. Thank you.

This is a known bug, as Doug said in his reply in this thread. No new information has been provided by Microsoft yet. :-(

It's September 13 and Office still has this horrible bug? Come on, Microsoft. I Can't spend the rest of my life printing to PDF every document! It needs and update as soon as possible!

I can assure you that the problem is receiving attention from Microsoft.

The problem arose during updating of some of the very old processes used by Word to make use of more modern coding architectures and practices that will allow the introduction of new features that would not be possible with the old coding, some of which is now going on being 40 years old.

Just reverting to the old code would preclude the introduction of new features and unfortunately, it takes time to work out the bugs in the new code. Too much time many of us would say, but, in the meantime, the work-around for us is to revert to an earlier version and build of our current Office installation.

Hope this helps,

I have a problem printing that may be similar but need confirmation:

Symptoms:

  • Windows 10 / Office 365 Subscription

  • For the past month or so I've been getting a "Not Responding" message while using Word on an intermittent but regular basis and not just when printing. If I Select the 'X' to kill Word then I get options and I typically choose restart. It typically comes back and works but the issue will return and has been doing this randomly on regular basis for a month or two.

  • Yesterday I started having the printing issues. The print job could be seen in the printer queue but would not print. You could see that it was trying to print in the bottom on the screen where it provides and execution status (see attached pic).

  • I also had it start to print but not complete. If I killed Word it would then eject the partially printed result. This was 100% repeatable.

  • I have no problem printing the Word file by selecting it from File Explorer but of course no control over printer options (e.g. page selection). So it's not a printer or connection issue.

Is this the same issue or different?
