Word Numbering Problem Increase Tab or Space triple digits

here is the problem 

  1. word 1
  2. word 2
  3. word 4

98. word 5

99. word 6

as you can see for double digit numbering, the space after then umber is normal from number 1 to 99.  When the number increases to 100, then the space increase much higher which I don't like.  

for example

98. word 5

99. word 6

100.     word 7

101.     word 8

I want the number space to be the same for triple digits, 

how can I fix that

You have to set the indent to match the tab position. Here are the settings I use for the List Number style:

That style is designed to align a single digit with the left margin; double and triple digits extend into the margin. You can avoid going into the margin by indenting the entire paragraph by, say, 0.25", which would make the settings 0.38", 0.5", and 0.5". Here's how that would look in the Define New Multilevel List dialog:
