Word is sluggish after switching Mac OS X to Catalina

Split from this thread.

Hello, thank you all for these posts. I did the update to Catalina on a Mac Pro yesterday and have only had an issue with very slow response times when typing in Word. it will work for a minute or two but then it stops responding, I sometimes see the spinning beach ball, and then it picks back up. So far, no crashes but achingly slow to work with.  I checked the Word version and it is 16.30, which autoupdate for Office 365 says is the most recent.

I tried saving the file locally rather than to the cloud with no change in response time.  I tried switching to DRAFT view instead of Print layout, which did reduce the amount of times this freezing occurs but not by much. the files started as .DOTX files but were then saved as .DOCX with the same issues.

Any suggestions?

thanks
