Word 365 - Styles Pane not displaying all styles when editing large document

Good day, MS Community,

I've got a user working on editing a large document in Word 365, and they're applying styles from an large list of both default and custom styles.

In the Style Pane Options, they have set "Select styles to show:" to "All Styles", and they have set "Select how list is sorted:" to "Alphabetical".

About half the time, whenever they click in the styles pane and scroll down to find a style called Text, the style pane just stops at the 'TA's - near "Table of Authorities" and "Table of Figures", etc.

The user then has to scroll to the very top of the styles list, then back down again, and usually on the second try, the rest of the entries in the styles list will load.

For reference, this is regarding Word for Office 365 MSO (16.0.11929.20836) 64-bit, on a PC running Windows 10 Enterprise Version 1909 Build 18363.900.

Has anyone else had an issue where the styles list does not load completely on the first try? Is there a workaround or a patch to correct this behavior?

Any guidance y'all can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Baxter,

Sorry for the inconvenience it may have caused.

I did a test from my side, but I cannot reproduce the same problem. And I noticed that there is no pre-made style named Text in my Style Pane.

I tried to manually create a new style named Text, and there was no similar problem. After opening the Style Pane, all other styles from Text down can be displayed normally.

To sort out the issue you encountered, you may try the following steps:
1. Update Office to the latest version. With Office updated, some issues would get resolved. So it’s a good idea to keep Office up to date.

2. Open Word in safe mode to exclude the issue is related to some third-party add-ins. Then check the result.
3. Delete and re-add the Text style and check the result.

And we may need you to provide some more information to further check it:
1. In Word, click File > Account, provide us a screenshot of the whole page of the Product Information.
2. Does the problem only occur on large documents? Will similar problems occur when creating a new blank document?

Appreciate your understanding.

Best regards,
Madoc

Create a new, blank document and then copy the existing content, minus the final paragraph mark, into that new document. Does that overcome the issue?

To show/hide paragraph marks (¶), as well as other nonprinting marks, click the ¶ icon on the Home tab.

Madoc, Stefan,

Thank y'all both for your replies. I'm having the user put your suggestions into practice now and I hope I'll be able to respond with the results before too long.

The user is also experiencing other strange behavior related to Word and managing very large, complex documents (especially typing "lag" and strange cursor behavior when editing long blocks of text), so this style box thing may be another manifestation of that.

I'll add more details as to the results of y'all's suggestions soon, and thank you again!

Madoc, please find below the requested screenshot of the Product Information page. I also had the user screenshot "About Outlook", because it seems to have more version numbers etc.:

You may note that the updates are handled by our domain administrators; we're on the semi-annual update cycle, I believe, but if y'all know of a specific update that will correct this issue, I can look into it.

With regards to the second question, "Does the problem only occur on large documents" - it appears so, the overwhelming majority of complaints from my users are coming when they're working on large, complex documents. I am also unable to recreate the problem on a small or new document.

My user is still working on the other part of your suggestion.

Hi Baxter,

Thanks for your response.

Based on Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps (listed by date), the latest version for Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel is version 2002 (Build 12527.20988). Because we did not recognize similar problems when Office 365 was in your version, we cannot guarantee that updating Office will solve this problem.

In addition to the other suggestions I provided, you can also try Stephan's suggestion to check the results.

Best regards,
Madoc
