Word 2016 - Footer issue with page numbers.

Hello -

I have a long document that I created with a lot of cutting and pasting (50 pages). I am having a difficult time creating a single section footer where I can display page numbers for the entire document. Right now I have almost 30 different footer sections and i can only get a few pages to display page numbers in the footer. I have tried everything to remove the footers and start again, nothing seems to work.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Lee

The easiest way to delete the footers is to go into each one and remove the page number. Because you have several section breaks, start at the beginning of the document and “Edit Footer.” Some sections may have footers linked, so you may have to unlink them. Take your time and go through the entire document and remove the page numbers. Once all footers are removed, start over. With section breaks numbering may be a tedious process. Take your time and go through using the page numbering and footer menus. Make sure you have show/hide button on so you can see page breaks and sections breaks. Also the link below may help you. It is a Microsoft word 2010 video, but it may be of help to you.

Each page on which the footer changes is the first page of a new section (i.e., there is a section break between that page and the one that precedes it). On each such page, you must go into the footer and, if the Link to Previous button in the Header & Footer Tools ribbon is not shaded, click it to turn it on.

You can use the Next button in the Header & Footer Tools ribbon to go from one section's footer to the next without closing the footer pane.

It's also possible that you have some sections that begin with a Continuous section break, so there could be two, three, or more sections on a single page. To get the footers to continue through all of the sections, you must link all of their footers even if some don't appear on any page. The Next button won't get you there; you'll have to insert a temporary page break (Ctrl+Enter) to make the section's footer visible, fix it, and then remove the page break.
